Vikings place LB Ivan Pace on injured reserve and sign LB Jamin Davis off Packers practice squadTaylor Fritz shared on social media the new hate messages he received at the start of the season. The world No. 4 is competing in the United Cup , where he made his debut with a loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime , and just hours later, he shared the hate messages he received on social media. This is not a new issue for players on both the ATP and WTA tours. With the rise of betting and the ability for fans to send messages directly to players on social media, many have spoken out about this controversial topic, with some even receiving threats. Fritz shares hate messages on social media Players like Caroline Garcia , Iga Swiatek , and Coco Gauff have previously reported receiving constant hate messages on social media. This time, it was the current No. 1 American, Taylor Fritz, who shared some of the messages he received shortly after a match. “New season of tennis has officially started. We’re so back ” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) alongside a screenshot of the messages he received on Instagram. “Someone will kill you soon,” “You are a dog sh*t,” and “I hope you get a sudden heart attack” were some of the messages visible in the screenshot, which Fritz received minutes after his loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime (6-4, 5-7, 3-6). Despite the loss, Team USA won their tie against Canada. In the first match, Coco Gauff defeated 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez (6-3, 6-2), paving the way for Fritz’s match, where he was defeated. They then played a deciding mixed doubles match (with the same singles participants), and the duo of Gauff and Fritz secured the win for the Americans (7-6, 7-5). Their next challenge will be against Croatia on December 31. Fritz will face the world No. 10, while later, world No. 3 Coco Gauff will challenge Paris 2024 silver medalist Donna Vekic , who had previously defeated Gauff in the third round of the Olympic Games, crushing Gauff’s hopes of winning a medal. Maryland men’s basketball’s lets opportunity slip away in 83-78 loss at No. 8 Purdue | TAKEAWAYSHAVE WE WITNESSED ‘THE MOMENT’ of the general election campaign? Will Simon Harris’s testy encounter in Kanturk with disability worker and activist Charlotte Fallon – for which the Taoiseach, who entered politics partly because he wanted to advocate for persons with disabilities, has apologised sincerely – be a bump in the road or a turning point? The video of his chancing upon Fallon in a supermarket has millions of hits online. He does not emerge favourably from it. The first draft of this column expressed relief to be examining “normal” politics after the chaos of the presidential election in the United States, and concurred with the assessment of journalists and pundits of the happenings on this side of the Atlantic: “meh.” If the vast majority of people I see on a daily basis are a reliable indicator, the denizens of the commentariat are not wrong. It has not grabbed popular attention. There is little enthusiasm. The climate has been one of passivity or resignation. “The crowd in power are probably the best of the bunch” is a commonly voiced sentiment. There also is a good deal of support for independents of all stripes borne out of frustration. There hadn’t been any drama. Unless the opinion polls and, perhaps more tellingly, the bookmakers were completely off the mark, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael were nearly fated to be the key parties in the new government. And that may still be the case. Micheál Martin and Simon Harris have been solid, if not spectacular, with the former definitely having fared better in the RTÉ leaders’ debate and the latter traversing constituencies and endeavouring to capitalise on the heralded “Harris bounce.” “I met Simon; I liked him and I think he means well” is a refrain I’ve heard multiple times. Harris let himself down badly on Friday, however. Will it move the needle discernibly? It might. On the one hand, it will communicate a signal to a swathe of gettable voters that Fine Gael is, at its core, elitist and uncaring. Conversely, it’s fair to assume that those most critical of the Taoiseach’s disposition during the impromptu conversation were never going to back his party. Mary Lou McDonald continues to demonstrate how formidable she is and, following a difficult period for her personally and politically, Sinn Féin’s slide seems to have abated, though it is hard to conceive of the beleaguered party getting to the Promised Land on this occasion. The “soft left” groupings should do OK, and it will be fascinating to see just how diverse a cadre of independents garner the citizenry’s imprimatur. All could profit from Harris’s misstep. This campaign has helped bring two quandaries, which, in reality, dwarf any single election in importance, sharply into focus. First, as house prices have increased a further 10% in the last year, is the growing gulf between owners and renters. The despondency of women and men of all ages who are unable to get a mortgage, despite being highly educated and well-paid, has been captured in TV and radio vox pops in recent weeks. Their plight is heart-wrenchingly sad. And they don’t believe politicians will solve the crisis. Second is how Donald Trump’s imminent return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue could impact Ireland negatively. Trump is an ardent America Firster who extols tariffs and wants to repatriate US jobs and tax revenue. This country obviously has an awful lot to lose and, while some of the apocalyptic scenarios being sketched are hopefully overwrought, caution with respect to forward planning is entirely appropriate. Yet restraint is conspicuously absent from the manifestos published lately. It is our responsibility as voters to remain cognisant of these big picture, massively significant matters and to factor them in as we ponder who to place our sacred trust in, notwithstanding a propensity for self-interest and short-termism that is shared by the public and their representatives. To our duties can be added, with kudos to Charlotte Fallon for her gutsy intervention, never abandoning our ambition to be a genuine republic. What transpired on Friday contributes a further element of intrigue to what are enthralling dogfights unfolding in numerous constituencies. Plenty, even after a rigorous analysis, are truthfully amenable solely to one of these alternative descriptions: either too close or too complex to call. Four are Wicklow, Galway West, Dublin Central and Donegal. This writer is not as brave as Barry Lenihan, Ivan Yates, et al. As such, there will be no firm predictions made, but I do want to raise a niggling question from each that I am grappling with excessively. In Wicklow, will Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly retain his seat? He snuck in by a whisker in 2020; he has never had much of a presence on the ground; and he is not a favourite of the local Fianna Fáil grassroots, loads of whom preferred Senator Pat Casey as their standard bearer. Everyone regards health as a challenging portfolio. Donnelly has had successes and he’s had failings. It may boil down to whether the party brand and the Tánaiste can propel him across the line. That is no sure thing and an upset might be in the offing. In Galway West, was the presumption that “celebrity candidate” Gráinne Seoige would inherit Éamon Ó Cuív’s Connemara seat for Fianna Fáil, potentially comfortably, incorrect? A TG4/Ipsos B&A poll suggests that she is struggling to connect. Seoige clearly benefits from name recognition. That said, rumours have it that she is not as beloved in her native territory as Ó Cuív, that there is scepticism of her newfound zest for politics and that the other Fianna Fáíl aspirant, Councillor John Connolly, may have the edge. Watch that space. In Dublin Central, could the controversial ex-MEP and ex-TD from north of the capital city, Clare Daly, parachute in and manage an unorthodox comeback? She is reported to have staunch endorsements from those who used to deliver leftist independents Tony Gregory and Maureen O’Sullivan to Leinster House. And in Donegal – where Sinn Féin is very strong, where the treasured family homes of thousands are crumbling due to mica and where many inhabitants of the “forgotten county” harbour an anti-establishment streak – are two Fianna Fáilers, Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and 76 year old Pat “the Cope” Gallagher, set to prevail? At least one survey says it’s possible. That result in Donegal would portend an excellent 29 November for Fianna Fáil. And I am leaning in the direction that Micheál Martin & Co may have the broadest smiles on their faces at the count centres ultimately. Of course, that’s just a semi-educated hunch. But Harris has committed an unforced error, one which some people will be disinclined to ignore or forgive with merely six days to go. A considerable chunk of them are only making their decisions now. We will soon find out how consequential this unfortunate gaffe was.

Games on a college basketball schedule don't contrast much more than the two NC State has this week. The Wolfpack (6-3) host Coppin State (0-10) on Tuesday in Raleigh, N.C., then hit the road to challenge No. 10 Kansas on Saturday. NC State enters its unusual week after snapping a three-game skid with an 84-74 overtime win at home Saturday against Florida State in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener. Transfers Marcus Hill and Dontrez Styles each had their season high, scoring 23 and 21 points, respectively. They scored 13 of NC State's 14 points in overtime. "Dontrez Styles was tremendous," Wolfpack coach Kevin Keatts said. "In the second half, he made play after play." Hill, who was the top scorer last year at Bowling Green (20.5 points per game), and Styles, who was the second-leading scorer last year at Georgetown (12.8 ppg), combined to hit 14 of 25 shots and pull down 11 rebounds. The win followed defeats to then-No. 13 Purdue and BYU, both by double-digit margins, in the Rady Children's Invitational and a 63-59 loss to Texas in the SEC/ACC Challenge. "The little things that impact the game are defending, making free throws and blocking out," Keatts said. "We handled that much better than we did against Texas." Coppin State arrives in Raleigh on a 23-game losing streak dating to January -- the longest current run of futility in Division I. Each of the Eagles' losses this season have come by double-digit margins, though they have been more competitive lately, falling to Baltimore rival Loyola (Md.) 68-57 and at Wagner 65-52 last week. Julius Ellerbe III has been one of Coppin's most reliable players lately, scoring a combined 20 points in the last two games. He had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a loss to George Mason last month. Teammate Peter Oduro recorded a double-double, with 16 points and 10 rebounds, in last month's loss at Saint Joseph's. "These things take time," Coppin State second-year coach Larry Stewart said. "It takes time to establish your culture. It takes time to get the right players in your system." --Field Level MediaSaquon Barkley entered the record books while helping the Eagles clinch the NFC East, becoming just . He saw a season-high 31 carries with Jalen Hurts out, including five straight to open a drive in the fourth quarter, netting him 52 yards and pushing him over 2,000. Barkley was then immediately removed, as he finished as fantasy’s RB4 this week despite not finding the end zone and sitting the final 10:49 of the lopsided win. Barkley is just 101 rushing yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson’s 40-year record, and he looks poised to do so in Week 18. Remarkably, just four of Barkley’s 15 touchdowns have come from inside 10 yards this season. Just imagine his fantasy season if Hurts didn’t steal 11 goal-line TD runs. Barkley will be 28 years old next season, but he’ll enter 2025 with a strong argument to be fantasy’s top pick. The Eagles didn’t run a snap on offense until 10 minutes into the game (with Dallas already totaling 100 yards) and had just six plays in the first quarter, but Kenny Pickett was effective (9.5 YPA) while recording a TD pass and run. Pickett had a third touchdown to A.J. Brown during the opening drive in the second half nullified by penalty. To add injury to insult, Pickett took a hit on the play from Micah Parsons that would force him to exit the game. Pickett then watched QB3 Tanner McKee toss touchdowns on two of his four career pass attempts. DeVonta Smith was banged up in the first quarter but shook it off and from . Smith was also late in the first half (Pickett executed a tush push TD instead), so he almost had three TDs despite the Eagles attempting just 19 passes in the easy win. • Before departing, Pickett had the play of the day. . Pickett also required a pain-killing injection for his broken ribs both before the game and at halftime, but he couldn’t finish, so McKee might be starting in Week 18. • , but he was just outside the end zone (he would record a TD catch later that same drive). • C.J. Gardner-Johnson , as the Eagles forced nine takeaways over two games versus the Cowboys this season. • Grant Calcaterra pulled down a sick one-handed catch: GRANT CALCATERRA GOT THAT DAWG IN HIM 🐶 | — Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) • Nick Sirianni has the second-most wins (behind George Seifert) through four seasons in coaching history. • Rico Dowdle eclipsed 100 rushing yards for the fourth time over his last five games, but he lost a fumble and hasn’t reached the end zone over the last month. It was still an impressive performance in a tough matchup and on a depleted Dallas offense missing CeeDee Lamb. • Josh Allen bounced back with three total touchdowns before resting the entire fourth quarter. The Bills are locked into the No. 2 seed, so it will be interesting to see how much (if at all) Allen plays next week while fighting for the MVP award. • James Cook recorded his 15th rushing touchdown after totaling four over his first two years in the league. He’s up to 17 total TDs on the year despite playing with a quarterback who’s run for 12 scores. • Amari Cooper saw just three targets, but one went for . • Keon Coleman led Buffalo with seven targets. He and also had a 40-yard catch on the opening drive nullified by penalty. • Aaron Rodgers entered aiming for his 500th career TD pass, but he became the most sacked QB in NFL history (surpassing Tom Brady) instead. He had a 14:1 TD:INT ratio over his previous eight games, but Rodgers was picked off twice Sunday, when he also took his first safety in nearly a decade. The Bills’ defense was healthier Sunday, but they had allowed 35.6 points per game over the last three weeks. To make Rodgers look even worse, Tyrod Taylor immediately threw two touchdowns after replacing him in the fourth quarter. Rodgers produced . • Davante Adams was clearly limited by his injury (and Rodgers), and . • Garrett Wilson suffered a bad lost fumble in the third quarter, but he added a garbage-time TD catch from Taylor. • Breece Hall failed again, seeing just one target against a Buffalo team bleeding receptions to backs. Hall was the No. 2 fantasy back behind only Christian McCaffrey after his snap limit was lifted in Week 6 last season, but he will go down as a fantasy bust in 2024 despite being a year further removed from knee surgery and the Jets replacing Zach Wilson with a four-time MVP winner at quarterback. • Baker Mayfield was 16-of-20 for 225 passing yards (11.3 YPA) with three TD passes . He’d finish with a career-high five touchdown tosses, benefitting from a bunch of throws inside the 10. Mayfield has 14 TD passes over the last four games, and he finished as fantasy’s QB2 this week. Mayfield has been great (his +20.2% CPOE was in the 98th percentile this week), but OC Liam Coen also deserves a ton of credit for an incredibly effective system. • Bucky Irving impressed yet again while acting as Tampa Bay’s clear lead back (Rachaad White appeared to be punished for losing a crucial fumble last week). Irving was tackled at the one-yard line after a nice catch-and-run, only to watch Mayfield throw four touchdowns inside the 10. Irving will enter 2025 as a clear top-10 fantasy back. • Mike Evans caught two short touchdowns after teammates were tackled just shy of the end zone, and he’ll enter Week 18 only 85 receiving yards short of his 11th consecutive 1,000-yard season to open his career. • Jalen McMillan , giving him six over the last four games. He’s totaled just 25 targets over that span (so regression is obvious), but it helps playing for a Tampa Bay offense averaging 32.7 points over six games since its bye. • The Buccaneers recorded a blocked punt that was returned for a score, ? • Bryce Young took too many sacks, but he got zero help from his rushing attack (or defense) with Chuba Hubbard out and finished with a +9.9% CPOE despite an aDOT (13.8 yards) in the 98th percentile. • Adam Thielen had four catches for 107 yards and . He’d add just one reception for three yards in the second half and finish with only six targets, but Thielen was fantasy’s WR6 this week anyway. • Sam Darnold threw for a career-high 377 passing yards and multiple TDs for the sixth time in his last seven games. Darnold is the latest example of why it often pays to wait on drafting fantasy quarterbacks, but he’s been even better than his most optimistic fans could’ve hoped. Darnold has posted a 100+ Passer Rating during 13-of-16 games this season. His 14 wins are the most ever by a Minnesota QB, and the Vikings will be the No. 1 seed if they win in Detroit next week. • Jordan Addison was open for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but Darnold underthrew him. Addison bounced back with , but his fantasy game could’ve been much bigger. • Justin Jefferson saw no official targets until six minutes were left in the first half, although he helped Jalen Nailor and drew a 17-yard defensive pass interference penalty. Jefferson also in the fourth quarter that was negated by penalty. Not scoring was disappointing after recording five TDs over the past three weeks and Jaire Alexander being out, but Jefferson has recorded at least seven catches for five straight games, and his presence was huge for the Vikings’ win. There was a hold, but this catch by was unbelievable 😱 WOW. — NFL (@NFL) • Josh Jacobs scored a rushing touchdown for the seventh straight game (totaling 11 over that span), but he lost his second fumble (during the opening drive) over the last three weeks and a late goal-line score to Emanuel Wilson. Jacobs had an awesome 19-yard TD run in the fourth quarter called back (Wilson would run in a score later that drive), and he leads the NFL in rushing yards on inside runs this season. Sunday was a solid effort in a tough matchup and coming off short rest. • Jordan Love’s biggest fantasy issue had been volume, but he flopped once again in a matchup against a pass-funnel defense. Love threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns when he faced the Vikings earlier this year, but he managed just 6.2 YPA while indoors this week. Love had been just the QB28 since Week 8 before Sunday’s dud, as he’s been a fantasy bust over the second half of the season. • Romeo Doubs led Green Bay in targets (11) with Christian Watson sidelined, while Jayden Reed recorded just one catch for six yards despite a zone-heavy matchup. Reed committed a bad drop on fourth down to end a second quarter drive; he’s also been a fantasy bust over the second half. • Drew Lock started 7-of-8 for 153 passing yards and three touchdowns (and a perfect 158.3 Passer Rating). He became the first Giants’ QB to record 300+ passing yards, four TD passes and in the same game since Eli Manning in 2014. Lock finished as fantasy’s QB3 and with ! Daniel Jones hasn’t thrown three TDs in a game . • Malik Nabers was playing injured and saw his second-fewest targets (eight) in any game this season, but he turned them into two touchdowns and a career-high 171 yards. Nabers’ , and he’d later . Nabers was also tackled inside the one-yard line, so he nearly had three touchdowns after being a “game-day decision.” Nabers is up to 104 catches on the season (despite missing two games), so he has a chance to break Bowers’ record in Week 18. Nabers’ upside is fantasy’s WR1 as soon as next season, but New York needs to get him a quarterback. MALIK NABERS IS LIKE THAT. 📺: on FOX 📱: — NFL (@NFL) • Dane Belton , and New York . • The Giants went from having the No. 1 overall pick to No. 4 after winning. • New York entered averaging an NFL-low 14.3 points but somehow scored 45 for the first time since 2015. • The Giants snapped their 10-game losing streak and avoided becoming the first team ever to finish 0-9 at home. • Jonathan Taylor during each of the last two championship weeks of the season. He’d struggled with Joe Flacco earlier this season, but Taylor matched a career-high with 32 carries Sunday. He’s scored five rushing touchdowns over the last two weeks, and Taylor has racked up 450 rushing yards over the last three. Taylor appeared a bit banged up in the second half (and ceded some snaps), and he also botched an easy walk-in two-point conversion in a 28-26 game. Still, managers will forgive Taylor, who's been one of fantasy’s heroes in the playoffs. • Joe Flacco had both an ugly pick and lost a fumble inside the final three minutes. The Giants entered with just three interceptions all season but recorded two Sunday. Still, Flacco slung it 38 times and helped both Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce finish as top 10 fantasy WRs this week. • Brian Thomas Jr. saw double-digit targets for the fifth straight game, and (performing a “too small” celebration afterward). BTJ saw multiple designed plays and had 89 yards from scrimmage and seven targets by halftime. The rookie was tackled inside the five-yard line after an 18-yard run, but fantasy managers can’t complain. Thomas Jr. will deal with more target competition next year, but he’ll be a borderline first-round fantasy pick in 2025. • Parker Washington pulled down an . • Tyjae Spears set a career-high with 95 rushing yards before exiting with another concussion late in the third quarter. Spears was fantastic Sunday, and he can be a top-10 fantasy back any week he’s given a full workload. But Sunday marked his second concussion of the season (despite wearing the Guardian Cap few other RBs do); he’s not built for a heavy workload. • Ameer Abdullah saw 24 opportunities while suddenly acting as Las Vegas’ lead back. Abdullah impressed while amassing 147 yards from scrimmage, topping 100 rushing yards for the first time in his 10-year career. Abdullah nearly scored, but he was tackled at the one-yard line on back-to-back plays during the opening drive (Alexander Mattison was also stuffed on the next play). • Brock Bowers secured all seven targets and broke the record for most catches by a rookie. He’s up to 108 with one more game to go. • Jakobi Meyers caught his first TD in nine weeks, although his day could’ve been even bigger. Aidan O’Connell had a bad throw during a possible long gain to Meyers during the opening drive, and Meyers fell in the end zone on what would’ve been his second TD grab early in the fourth quarter. • Spencer Rattler led New Orleans in rushing (Clyde Edwards-Helaire saw more opportunities than Kendre Miller), but he finished with a -14.2% completion percentage over expectation in the seventh percentile. • Foster Moreau’s . • The Saints finished with just 22:10 time of possession. • Tyreek Hill maintained fantasy value despite Tua Tagovailoa being out, but the move to Tyler Huntley destroyed De’Von Achane during championship week. Achane had seen at least seven targets in four straight games before getting just two Sunday despite no Jaylen Waddle. • Jerome Ford injured his ankle midway through the second quarter, which led to D’Onta Foreman leading Cleveland in carries. • Jerry Jeudy suffered a drop to end the opening drive of the second half, but his 18 targets were the third most in any game this season. Jeudy turned them into 12 catches for 94 scoreless yards, which is herculean given his quarterback. • Dorian Thompson-Robinson got 3.6 YPA on 47 passes. His -14.9% CPOE was in the sixth percentile despite an aDOT (5.6 yards) in the ninth. It’s almost unfathomable, but . Few if any quarterbacks have been less effective in NFL history.

HALIFAX — Uncertainty is a key theme this year at the annual, three-day gathering in Halifax of political leaders, defence officials and policy analysts who aim to promote democratic values around the globe. The 300 delegates from 60 countries will take part in the Halifax International Security Forum, which begins Friday, less than three weeks after Donald Trump’s United States presidential election victory — a result that has raised questions about U.S. military support for the threatened democracies of Ukraine and Taiwan. Over the past two years, Trump has repeatedly taken issue with the almost $60 billion in assistance to Ukraine provided by U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration, and he’s made vague vows to end the war. The president-elect has also been unclear if his upcoming administration would defend Taiwan in the event of an invasion by China, and has suggested the self-governed island “should pay us for defence.” Peter Van Praagh, president of the forum, said in an interview Wednesday that in November 2016 — after Trump’s first ascent to the White House — there was “a level of shock that this could happen,” but he said this year shock has been replaced with a feeling of incertitude. “One of the things that the president-elect Trump brings to the table is a level of uncertainty .... Now everybody is looking to reduce that uncertainty and get some type of clarity on what his priorities will be,” he said. Van Praagh expects the speakers at the 16th forum will present evidence justifying why the Trump administration must continue Biden’s financial and military support for Ukraine, arguing that the security of democracies around the globe depends on it. He said he’s pleased former Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen will deliver a speech Saturday, which is expected to emphasize how U.S. support for Ukraine is crucial to the security of her country and its democracy. Tsai left office in May. During her two terms in office she came under frequent attack from China for her refusal to recognize Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the island. Van Praagh said the politician — who remains an influential figure in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party — is expected to describe how the threat from China isn’t isolated from the conflict in Central Europe. “All of these things are connected. Ukrainian security is connected with security in eastern Asia,” he said. Van Praagh said he hopes speakers at the forum help to influence members of the U.S. congressional delegation on the importance of backing Taiwan and Ukraine. In 2016, former Republican Sen. John McCain was a prominent and influential figure in Washington, and he regularly attended the Halifax security forum — bringing the ideas he heard back to the Senate. An award has been given out in his name at the forum each year since he died in 2018. This year, two Republican senators, James Risch of Idaho — who may chair the influential foreign relations committee after Trump takes office — and Mike Rounds from South Dakota are attending as part of the U.S. congressional delegation, along with four Democratic Party senators. “These guys not only have a say, they have a vote,” said Van Praagh. Risch will be a speaker at the opening session of the conference on Friday, along with Democratic Party Sen. Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire, as they discuss America’s role in the world. The opening day will also hear from Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, who will sit on a panel titled “Victory in Ukraine” alongside Rounds. Other invited guests include Gen. Jennie Carignan, head of the Canadian Armed Forces, who will sit on a panel with U.S. Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific command, and Andrew Shearer, director of Australia’s Office of National Intelligence, on Saturday. Many of the events over the forum’s three days, including a plenary session on threats to the Canadian Arctic from Russia and China, tie back to the conflict in Ukraine, and to whether Western democracies should continue to back the country. “Should we succeed in Ukraine and push Russia out of Ukraine, every other international challenge becomes easier,” Van Praagh said. “If Russia succeeds, everything becomes more difficult.” “The alternative is chaos and more war.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 21, 2024.
