AAP FACTCHECK – Video of explosions in the sky over Los Angeles in the US show fireworks that were part of an art installation, not a cloud seeding experiment, as social media posts claim. The event took place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum sports stadium on September 15,2024. Facebook posts suggest the fireworks were something quite different. One post describes the explosions as a “new found Cloud Seeding experiment”. The comment is made about a video, shared in the post, that shows explosions in the sky and drifting smoke over what appears to be a residential area. Text above the video reads: “Mysterious explosions in the clouds spotted over South Central L.A. Was it an experiment or phenomena?” A watermark on the video points to the Instagram account of “video creator” WestUpMedia and a post from December 8, 2024. That post’s caption reads: “Have you ever seen anything like this? Small explosions occur among the clouds, resembling the artificial cloud seeding technique. Are we witnessing a bizarre experiment or a rare atmospheric phenomenon?” Cloud seeding is a legitimate scientific process that improves a cloud’s chances of producing rain or snow. However, the video in the posts does not show cloud seeding. Several comments below the Instagram post point to the event behind the mysterious explosions. One reads: “It was an art installation using fireworks over the coliseum a few weeks back. I posted the video a few weeks back showing what it was on my page.” The fireworks were part of a display at the LA stadium, hosted by the University of South California, to mark the opening of arts extravaganza PST ART . The fireworks segment was called WE ARE: Explosion Event, an installation by artist Cai Guo-Qiang. Only 5000 people attended the event in the Coliseum itself, though some of the firework displays were visible across southern LA. Official video from the event shows the pattern of explosions seen in the Facebook and Instagram posts (six minutes 35 seconds). Worth noting is the drift of the smoke (6:50) towards the main entrance of the Coliseum at the eastern end of the stadium. That drift matches the smoke in the social media post video – the direction of drift if indeed that video was shot from South Central LA , as claimed in the post. Amid 23andMe's Turbulence, Can You Delete Your Genetic Data? What We KnowNoneLEWISTON, N.Y. (AP) — Adam Clark had 18 points in Merrimack's 80-62 victory over Niagara on Sunday. Clark added nine assists for the Warriors (4-6, 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Devon Savage scored 18 points, finishing 6 of 10 from 3-point range. Sean Trumper went 6 of 7 from the field (3 for 3 from 3-point range) to finish with 16 points. Jhaylon Martinez led the way for the Purple Eagles (4-6, 1-1) with 14 points and six rebounds. Jean-Philippe Mateta struck in the second half with the only real piece of quality in a nervy encounter between two struggling teams. It is now two wins and three draws from the last six matches for Glasner’s side, whose winter revival is gathering pace nicely following a sticky start to the campaign. “I feel very happy, we’re all very pleased with the result, it was not the best performance but the result was more important,” said the Eagles boss. “Most of the time we controlled the game and we scored an amazing goal, a fantastic finish from JP. “We had more chances to decide the game but we couldn’t, but I think the win was well deserved. “We didn’t give them any chances from open play and with a clean sheet you can always take the win. “It’s a big win. Now it’s not time to sit back and relax but to keep going. In four days we face Manchester City. We stay humble. There are still many things to improve but we are on the right path.” Ipswich looked the likelier to score as a low-key first half drew to a close and were denied by a point-blank save by Dean Henderson from Harry Clarke’s near-post header. Shortly after the interval Wes Burns got clear down the right and lifted an inviting cross towards Liam Delap, whose header was straight at Henderson. However, from out of nowhere Palace conjured up a lightning counter-attack to go ahead on the hour. Eberechi Eze led the charge before feeding Mateta, who surged forward with a couple of stepovers before brushing off the attention of Jacob Greaves and finishing superbly past Arijanet Muric. It was the French forward’s sixth goal of the season, and his first away from Selhurst Park. Back came Ipswich with Leif Davis fizzing in another cross for Delap, who somehow mistimed his jump and completely missed the ball from six yards. As time ticked down Greaves looped a header against the far post, with the rebound just eluding substitute Ali-Al Hamadi. “Frustrating night,” said Town boss Kieran McKenna. “It was a tight first half, we weren’t fantastic in terms of the flow of the game and didn’t create as many opportunities as we wanted. But having said that neither did our opponents. “In the second half we conceded a really poor goal and that proved decisive. We can do better than we did tonight.”WILLMAR — The Willmar Municipal Utilities Commission during its regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 25, will be discussing the general manager position and any recommendations the negotiating team may have about who should fill that role. The meeting takes place at 11:45 a.m. Monday in the auditorium at Willmar Municipal Utilities, 700 Litchfield Ave. S.W. Willmar Municipal Utilities has been operating under director of administration and interim general manager Janell Johnson since John Harren’s retirement on Sept. 20. Johnson is one of the finalists remaining for the position of general manager, as well as Willmar Municipal Utilities staff electrical engineer Jeron Smith. Two other finalists, Joel Lemke, director of public utilities and transportation at Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and Rick Wicklund, utilities manager at Sun Prairies Utilities in Wisconsin, both turned down the position after it was offered to them. The two individuals decided against moving to Willmar to take the position after their extensive interviews. During the first round of straw poll votes following interviews on Oct. 21, Smith and Johnson were tied as the second-choice candidate, each receiving one first-place vote and two second-place votes. In a second round of straw poll voting after selecting Wicklund as the top choice, Smith received four votes and Johnson received three votes from Municipal Utilities Commission members. Although he voted in earlier straw poll votes, Willmar City Council liaison Mike O’Brien did not vote in the final straw poll vote as he is not a voting member of the commission. Johnson has served as the Willmar Municipal Utilities director of administration for three years. Prior to that, she was interim finance director/customer service supervisor/human resources manager for one year, human resources/compliance manager for two years, compliance/safety officer for three years and compliance officer for two years. Before her employment with Willmar Municipal Utilities, Johnson served as the city administrator/clerk/treasurer for Grove City for 10 years. She holds an associate degree in accounting from the Willmar Area Vocational Technical Institute. Prior to being Willmar Municipal Utilities electric engineer, Smith served as the Municipal Utilities assistant electrical engineer for four years. He previously worked in information technology with Rambow Inc. for one year and was a controls engineer with Relco LLC for one year. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering.
Wake Forest 67, Detroit 57No. 22 Xavier aims to keep its perfect record intact Monday night in Fort Myers, Fla., when it takes on South Carolina in the Fort Myers Tip-Off. The Musketeers (5-0) are coming off an 80-55 victory on Wednesday over Siena, while the Gamecocks (3-2) beat Mercer on Thursday 84-72. Against Mercer, South Carolina sank a season-best 12 3-pointers -- tied for the fourth-most in a single game under third-year coach Lamont Paris. Jamarii Thomas, a senior transfer from Norfolk State, had 19 points and swished 4 of 5 shots from behind the arc. "Thomas got some good, clean looks," Paris said. "It was good to see those guys make their shots. Hopefully it gets those guys going in the right direction." On the season, the Gamecocks are making 7.8 3-pointers per game and shooting 32.5 percent from deep. Senior guard Jacobi Wright makes a team-best 1.8 3-pointers per game and shoots 37.5 percent from behind the arc. At 13.0 ppg, he is second on the team behind Collin Murray-Boyles (15.8). Xavier is allowing eight makes from deep per game and is letting opponents shoot 38.5 percent from behind the arc, which ranks 337th in the country. And despite an undefeated record so far for the Musketeers, third-year coach Sean Miller is worried about his players developing bad habits. "We have a virus that everybody is looking at the stat sheet, trying to get as many points as they possibly can," Miller said after the win over Siena. "They want to win, but they really want to win and score. We need a couple of guys that are willing to rebound, defend, make the extra pass, play at a high level defensively and understand what makes a team great." Marcus Foster did a decent job of doing a little bit of everything for Xavier against Siena, piling up 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal. It was the first double-digit scoring outing for Foster -- a grad transfer from Furman -- in a Xavier uniform. Since 2008, Xavier is 25-11 against teams from the Southeastern Conference, but it hasn't played South Carolina in that stretch. --Field Level Media

Thank you, everyone, for turning up this morning. Welcome to the UBS Technology Conference. I'm Michael Briest, I lead up our European software effort and delighted to have with me Dominik Asam, who is CFO of SAP, as I'm sure you know. Question-and-Answer Session Q - Michael Briest So, we've got about half an hour. If you have any questions, there's a QR code on the desk, and you can submit some questions to me, which I can put to Dominik. But obviously, I've got some to start with. And I'm sure you're getting tired of this. Every conference starts with a macro question. But you're doing a fantastic job in moving your customers to upgrade ERP. A lot of the industries you serve are financially challenged. There's political uncertainty in much of Europe, including in your domestic market. Why do you think customers are willing to sign on the dotted line for those sort of multiyear commitments of migrations? What is the value they see? And is there any more hesitancy today than there was, say, three or six months ago? Dominik Asam So, I'd say the major benefit we have is right now just the upgrade cycle that a lot of customers need to move to the next generation of SAP systems. And I think the evangelization on the benefits of the cloud is making good progress. And they also see that with AI being in the cloud has certain advantages they can lever. Yes, of course, there's macroeconomic pressure, and we do see that also in some segments, think about Fieldglass, Temporary Workers, Concur, Travel Expenses, and then also on the Ariba network on

We’re taping this early Tuesday afternoon after the Browns-Brancos game. Terry, what’s going on? Terry (02:03.282) Well, a lot, if you, James wants to know on the most amazing performances, good, bad, and otherwise highly entertaining. And we could talk about that, but actually want to do something we have never done on this podcast. Talk Ohio state football a little bit. And I’m going to roll out lean on you because, we have three guys basically write about Ohio state a lot. I’m not one of them. David Campbell (02:08.824) Hahaha David Campbell (02:18.722) Which is... Alright, yeah, let’s do it a little bit. Terry (02:30.554) Because I’m don’t go down as I found as I got older, when I was at the beacon journal, David, I was sometimes going through that Ohio state game on Saturday and the Browns on Sunday. And frankly, it was killing me. I was doing a bad job on both. So when I came to the point, you were 17 years ago, Bill Livingston loves Ohio state anyway. So it was easy for that him to take that and we just concentrate on the Browns. But the reason I want to start with this is I think there’s, know, David Campbell (02:40.866) Wow. Terry (02:59.278) Kind of an on the ground topic, Brian, Brian day, good coach, bad coach, et cetera. But there’s also lot of big issues that interests me around this. talks a lot about college football, but let’s start with, when you watch that game, David, and I, and cause you follow college football a more than I do in Ohio state. What happened out there? David Campbell (03:20.846) so yeah, we, we have, Stefan Krasnik, Stephen Means, Andrew Gillis covered the team and Jimmy Watkins was down there too. And I thought they really hit it on the head. It’s, it’s kind of like when that phrase paralysis by, by analysis. And, and I think Jimmy was pretty strong on this in his column. They’ve gotten so worked up about the Michigan rivalry and proving that they’re tough. That they, that they didn’t. Terry (03:38.001) Mm-hmm. Terry (03:47.132) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (03:49.518) play the way they play on Saturday. And it kind of reminds me of a scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. There’s some scenes in like National Treasure where somebody is banging their head against a wall or pounding on a wall for 10 minutes trying to get through. And then somebody says, look, there’s an open door like 10 feet over here. And I just feel like Ohio State is at the point where they are just ramming their heads into this Michigan wall trying to prove something. Terry (04:04.604) Mm-hmm. Terry (04:10.703) Yep. David Campbell (04:18.796) And it’s like, listen, over here is the way we normally play. Why don’t we throw the ball 35 times to these amazing receivers we have. if we’re going to lose, lose the way we play instead of trying to play the way Michigan plays. And they just got suckered into doing, into running the ball too much and doing a lot of things that they don’t normally do. So anyway, that’s what I saw on Saturday. Terry (04:39.686) Well, as Roberta would say, why are they running where everybody’s standing? She says that often, you you watch them run to the line a couple of times. And as you know, and I know, oftentimes if you fake it to the running back, the tight end slides and he’s open. That’s one, but it’s actually, to me, it’s kind of fun to trick people as opposed to just running into the wall. The other thing that I believe, David Campbell (04:45.836) Yes. Terry (05:06.756) As opposed to some people, Ryan Day’s not from here and he doesn’t understand the rivalry or whatever. he gets it. All right. And he’s field, if anything, it’s too much the other way. And there was a spot in the game. Wasn’t it there? They ended up having to call a timeout and then he had too many men on the field on defense. Remember that. David Campbell (05:15.048) you better believe it. David Campbell (05:30.828) Yeah, it was toward the end. had to call a timeout and Michigan changed personnel and Ohio State didn’t get guys out fast enough. think Ryan Day was saying after the game, like the referees did not give us enough time to get our personnel out and we got caught and we have to take another time out. So that was not ideal, but you know what? It didn’t matter. the way they lost that game was a matter of style and approach. Terry (05:46.246) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (06:00.808) and trying to be what you’re not. And that was, it was a small thing. might’ve been, yeah. Terry (06:05.486) I, right, but I agree with that, but there are a couple other just minor things I think that happen when you’re so uptight about trying to get everything right. You sometimes blow the obvious, one of it being your game plan. And then these little things like getting these guys out there on time and ready to go. And that just could be a product of having lost three in a row and fearing losing four. And so that’s. You know, you really don’t get that in the NFL. I mean, yeah, you haven’t beat the Steelers, but it’s not like If you win a bunch of other games but you lose to the Steelers a couple years in a row, we gotta fire you. David Campbell (06:49.294) Yeah. And it is interesting in the NFL, like this thing started with Michigan a few years ago, right? As you mentioned, where it’s like, we’re tougher than Ohio State. We’re, we’re going to prove it in the trenches. And ever since then, like, think Ryan Day and Ohio State have taken that personally and have been trying to prove to the world that they can play tough football. Like last year when Ohio State won in Notre Dame, Ryan Day went on a tirade against Lou Holtz, the former Notre Dame coach about where’s Lou Holtz now? We’re tough. We’re tough. We’re tough. And it’s like, Terry (06:56.754) Yes. Terry (07:05.178) Right. Terry (07:14.13) Yeah David Campbell (07:18.328) The Kansas City Chiefs don’t worry about proving they’re tough every week. Like they don’t, they go out and they have Patrick Mahomes throw the ball all over the place. They run as they can. They have a good defense and they win. Like they’re not trying to prove every week that they’re the toughest guys on the field. Cause that’s not really what it’s about. It’s about who has the most points. So. Terry (07:20.751) No. Terry (07:37.042) And then where I wanted to go with this is the big picture of college football in Ohio state. And this is what the part that interests me where I feel a little more on solid ground because admittedly, as I said, I just, for a variety of reasons having to do with my sanity and just able at the, at the age of 169, I just can’t follow all the sports all the time without the brains running out of my head. But. David Campbell (07:59.842) Yeah. Terry (08:05.51) People want to fire Ryan Day. Do you know what the buyout is? David Campbell (08:09.582) I don’t, but it’s in the millions. What is it? Terry (08:12.242) As in 38 million. Okay. That would make the second highest buyout ever in college football history. You know, as number one, Jimbo Fisher checks in at 76 million from Texas A to be paid out through the year, 2031. Now, so they make, yeah, they makes basically 10 million a year. The buyout if they fire him at the end of the year is 37 million. David Campbell (08:33.206) It’s like a Bobby Bonia deal. Terry (08:42.47) But there’s more, as they say, because remember, these guys bring in coaches, highly paid coaches. All right, who’s the highest paid assistant coach on the Ohio State staff? No. Jim Knowles, you’re right, 2.2 million. I was surprised because I thought Chip Kelly would be it. He comes in at 2 million, number two. Number three is Brian Hartline at 1.6. David Campbell (08:55.374) Larry Johnson? No, it’s got to be Jim Knowles at 2 million a year. Yes. David Campbell (09:06.338) the offensive coordinator. Terry (09:10.226) They have six total coaches making a million or more. So I kind of put that together and I don’t know how long some of those contracts would go, but just for this year, it looked like their assistant coaches make about 11 million. So you go a minimum now. So we’ll just kind of round all that up to 39 million plus 11 million, but round that all the up to 50 million. If you want to dump out of these guys, of course, then you got to pay new ones. But here’s something else that I think is going on. Stay with me, this could be little bit floating around in the clouds. Terry (09:53.394) It’s always been where college, big time college football is a TV show for ratings. Big money come from that, but never has it been like the last few years. So blatant to do that where the big 10 has USC and UCLA and all a nationwide TV show is the big 10. That’s what they want to do. Then roll into that sports gambling, how that has become part of the TV show. What they really now when you have a TV show You actually like all the stuff that’s going on at Ohio State right now With drama frustration. You can’t beat Michigan. Do you fire Ryan Day all this kind of stuff? So this is like really good for all the shows built in around the TV show of the different games So they love all this now As if there’s not there’s even more David Campbell (10:53.358) It’s like an infomercial now. And there’s more. Terry (10:54.928) How much? Yes, it is. How much? There is more, as in 20 million more. As, what is that number, David Campbell? David Campbell (11:04.588) the amount that Ohio State spent on players this year. Terry (11:07.25) You got it. That’s the NIL among the highest in all of college football. So if you’re part of the collective and all that, and you’re saying, wait a minute, we got one of the highest paid coaching staffs in college. We put out among the highest payroll at 20 million, by the way, this just begs for some sort of salary kept by among these power five schools. and it can’t beat Michigan. We’ll just raise more money and buy everybody out. David Campbell (11:42.798) All right, so we need to pause here for a minute because yeah, well, no, so here’s the deal. If this was last year, there would be a Paul hanging over this program for the next year until they got another shot at winning the big 10. But with the expanded playoff, it is entirely possible that Ohio state takes a week off, regroups, comes back in two weeks and goes on a run for the national championship and wins the whole thing. Terry (11:45.966) Yes, and that’s what I mean. Now I threw all this at you to see what you make of it. Terry (11:58.802) Mm-hmm. Terry (12:06.972) Mm-hmm. Terry (12:12.261) Absolutely. David Campbell (12:12.39) and the other thing to think about is like, all right, what does this program look like without Ryan Day right now? Who are you going to get? And we talk about this a lot when you’re going to be firing coaches in the NFL or whatever, who are you going to get? Right? Cause that’s an important question. You have to have a list of people. Ohio state once again, once again, has one of the top five recruiting classes coming in. They even after the loss, they got a commitment yesterday from a five star quarterback in the class of 2027. Terry (12:20.242) Mm-hmm. Terry (12:36.956) Yeah. Terry (12:41.552) It’s amazing. David Campbell (12:41.676) Like the recruiting is there, the money’s there. Ohio state’s athletic budget is like $280 million. So, I mean, you’re throwing around some big numbers there, but the football team is what powers a lot of that. So we might be talking about something totally different one month from now. The program is in good shape. They lost one game to Michigan and they need to figure it out and stop trying to be who they’re not. I mean, that’s kind of where I see the thing right now. I’m not an Ohio state fan, but just looking on from afar, like. Terry (12:48.144) Yeah. Mm-hmm. David Campbell (13:11.33) You’re going to blow this up. mean, he, two years ago, he was like this far from winning the national championship. And now I know the hurt of the Michigan loss is sticking with a lot of Buckeye fans. A lot of them want him to go, but the thing is they’re right there. They’re right there. I mean, what do you want to be like? Look where Michigan has been over the last 10 years. It’s just been, and they barely qualified for a bowl going into last week’s game. So it can fall off real fast. I think. Terry (13:15.634) Mm-hmm Terry (13:30.587) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (13:39.896) They need to let things simmer down a little bit and just see where they’re at in a month. yeah, go from there. Terry (13:45.724) Good. You did that better than I would have, because that’s where I was going to go with it. You did. Cause again, you’re even closer to it. Right. Cause the first of all, these people that I just kept getting, he should not be coaching on Monday. like, what? You know, stop. Secondly, you said that they are right. But to my point, it would you say 245 million is the budget. Whatever it is. Okay. David Campbell (13:47.95) Okay. David Campbell (14:10.658) think it’s 280 million. 275 million, 274.9 in 2023. Terry (14:15.142) That falls into my TV show thing. Where’s all that money? The Big Ten network and the ESPN contracts, all that. The network contracts they have. So actually they could blow these guys out probably and come up with the cash. I just threw out the money in there just to show you what these guys make. maybe it’s me, but I was surprised how high some of the salaries were. And then you... But the collective thing to me is very interesting. Like the people behind paying the players, how much power do they have? You know, what do you mean? David Campbell (14:49.8) it’s, I, I remember when Freddie kitchens was coaching the Browns and he, was telling a lot of people like he would never coach in college because it is a relentless never ending battle to maintain the program. Like signing day is tomorrow, Terry, like national signing day. And then the transfer portal opens on Monday. So these coaches have to be on the phone with players all the time, trying to convince them to stay, to commit. Terry (15:06.897) Yeah. Terry (15:11.09) Yeah. Terry (15:14.802) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (15:17.238) or stay or, let me hook you up with the people at the collective so we can find how much money we can give you. mean, heck, you were talking to somebody in the Mac recently who told you they have to figure out how much they’re gonna pay their kid, right? I mean. Terry (15:26.864) Yeah, no, he wasn’t in the Mac. He was a former Mac AD. He’s at a higher level school. He’s at a power five school now, but not one of the biggies. And they were discussing, but how much do we pay the big, the question that the table that day was how much do we pay our kicker? So no, it wasn’t in the Mac, but no, to your point, yes, that, that, that, that’s relentless. By the way, did you see the news about Freddie? David Campbell (15:34.264) Yeah, so it’s a never ending. Yeah. David Campbell (15:53.718) I did. He has taken over at North Carolina, right? That’s that football coach. What do you think of that? Terry (15:56.484) Yes. It’s like you were, you were Tar Heel blue or you don’t matter. Remember that? Yeah. my, it just shows how these guys pop up everywhere too. That’s another, interesting thing about pro sports. So I actually, I’m kind of done on Ohio state, whatever, whatever you want to say, but I just wanted to kind of bring it up cause we, we never do it. David Campbell (16:02.542) That’s right. Terry (16:22.864) I got interested in it. did watch the game. was, I for what it’s worth, I was appalled by the play calling and, and the, how about the, last thing. Chip Kelly made his reputation doing what? David Campbell (16:39.424) running spread offense and kind of revolutionizing revolutionizing formations and the way the ball was spread around the field right spread spread football. Terry (16:46.682) Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. In fact, this in a hurry up thing, you know, play every 22 seconds, which, then Sean Lewis, when he took over Kent State dropped it down to 18 seconds. It was almost like the Norfield park was at every 18 minutes. The place goes crazy. You know, he was like 18 to 20 seconds, which worked at, at Kent the only time they have one. And that’s why to see this was so odd to me because I hadn’t been watching them and I’m going, is that. David Campbell (17:01.208) Right. Terry (17:15.89) Does somebody take over Chip Kelly’s brain? I mean, it was really strange. David Campbell (17:22.03) They have probably three or four NFL draftable receivers on that team. And I have to find the step for you, Terry, about the way they structured their offense. So Will Howard, the quarterback, he had 33 passing attempts against Michigan. None of them went more than 20 yards through the air. None. And he threw for 175 yards. So you have the best receiving core. Terry (17:28.156) Yeah. Terry (17:32.017) Okay. David Campbell (17:51.808) One of the best receiving courts in the history of college football and you don’t throw one pass 20 yards in the air just. Terry (17:58.226) I mean, when we, when we get to the Browns, we’ll, talk about this, but one thing, Jamis Winston understands, I got a fast guy and he’s a good receiver. I’m trying one. I mean, seriously, you run far. I throw far. Let’s see what happens. And had the Buckeyes done that a couple of times, something good might’ve happened. David Campbell (18:20.856) They should be taking like eight deep shots a game with the players they have. Terry (18:23.874) Yeah. mean, guys get drafted, like you said, all the time and they do well in the NFL, but that wasn’t that odd too. mean, here’s Chip Kelly, the designer of the hurry up offense. As you said, spread offense, throw it around, take some shots. And it was like Woody Hayes came back. David Campbell (18:43.138) No tempo, no deep shots, yeah. Terry (18:44.642) Nothing. Yeah, just very confused. by the way that starts with your, know paralysis by analysis and That is was probably the product of that. So So we are done Yeah David Campbell (18:54.99) But yeah, I mean, we were just talking about Ty Jerome, Terry, right? And the fact that he went to Virginia and one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in sports was when Bennett and that Virginia team lost to a 16 seed as a number one seed in the NCAA tournament. And I’m sure there were people at Virginia who wanted to get rid of him after that happened. And what did they do the next year? They came back and they won the whole thing. So things change quickly. And like I said, we’ll see where we’re at in a month, but I think Terry (19:08.272) Yeah. Terry (19:13.008) They did. David Campbell (19:23.672) This program is as strong as it’s ever been. There’s just one thing they haven’t been able to do. Terry (19:28.378) But I would argue, the way, though, back then there was not a collective at Virginia or whatever it was was certainly not nearly as powerful as that collective at Ohio State for the Virginia basketball collective, whatever that may or may not have even been back then. I mean, or the Virginia boosters to, to, be specific as. David Campbell (19:43.373) Right. David Campbell (19:48.578) Yeah, you know, when Urban Meyer was the coach, he used to go to his staff every week and he’d be like, how are we doing? Right? Just like, how are we doing this week? And I think if you look at the program and you ask, how are they doing? I think they’re doing pretty well, except for the one weekend in November when they can’t get it done. we’ll see. Like I said, we’ll, no more in a month, I guess. Right. We’ll see. All right, Terry. So the Browns last night put on a show on Monday night football. Terry (19:57.81) Yeah. Terry (20:02.791) Yeah. Terry (20:08.124) Well, okay. Terry (20:17.298) You David Campbell (20:17.472) in a 41 to 32 loss to the Broncos. The Browns are now three and nine. I think I saw about 50 things on social media about the, that was the James Winston experience. And, and I know you’ve been writing about that too, but yeah, general thoughts on what we saw last night. was, it was good theater, as you mentioned theater earlier. Terry (20:29.04) Yes. Terry (20:35.65) It was. And Jamis has, all right, let’s first talk about the Sean Watson experience, but on a little higher level. I mean, we know how poorly he played and everything. I’m not going to get into all that, nor are we going to redo the trade and that. But the dismal mood that surrounded the team during his games was evident. And it’s even more evident since he’s not there. Whatever people don’t want to say it, they were looking at within a couple of games in that season, you could tell the other players did not think they could win a game with Deshaun. Period. You could score on 17 points and 15 points and 13 points against mediocre teams like Vegas and New York. And I’m probably forgetting a couple others. I mean, Jacksonville, they won. They only score 18 points against those guys. So that is what Jameis Winston actually walked into. think a one in 16 that couldn’t score 20 points that to me had no faith on anything. And he comes in here and granted it’s a, it’s a, it’s a real show, but they needed a real show. And this is not to say that Jameis must be this long-term starting answer at quarterback or anything of that sort. But it is to say he went from them being utterly a walk unwatchable. to me, almost the fans were in despair reading the emails I was getting to now it’s like, well, there’s your TV show again. What exactly is going to happen from quarter to quarter? And he does have victories over Pittsburgh and Baltimore. David Campbell (22:33.102) I think you’re right, Terry, with every passing week, the Browns look worse for sticking with Watson as long as they did. I mean, it was a big part of the broadcast last night. Troy Aikman was talking about it. we haven’t, I’m interested in this, Terry, and what you think. So I don’t know if it’s because of how analytically driven the Browns are, but we’ve talked about the Mayfield thing over and over here. The Browns, when they make a decision, they seem to stick with it and stick with it. Terry (22:39.983) Yeah. David Campbell (23:02.656) and stick with it and stick with it and stay with it and try to like prove that they were right about something. like they were saying last night on the broadcast, what would this season have looked like if they would have made a change after week three? Terry (23:15.462) I mean, within three or four games, you knew he’s terrible. top of that, here’s another thing, David. Those fans are, I mean, excuse me, those players are watching not only the same game as the fans, they’re watching it over and over again in the tapes and the breakdown. They know more than we do how bad Watson was. They just know. And then it started even remember James came in the fourth quarter of the bingo game. Now it was sort of a blow up, but he took him right down the field and scored. And I’m looking at that going, well, let’s see this guy one, two, three, zips the ball. He’s drawn from the pocket. Granite he’s a veteran, small sample size garbage time, but I’m going, this actually looked like an NFL quarterback. We were not watching an NFL quarterback and the players themselves. No, they were not watching an NFL court. Now the team’s got all kinds of weaknesses. You know, Hidden behind all this has been the complete collapse of the defense into from, one of the better ones in the league to total mediocrity and sometimes worse, at different times. But I mean, my argument on James is he is exactly what they needed at this point of the season to dry some life into it and to also help the front office evaluate some of these receivers. I have some numbers, Jerry, Judy, and the seven games of Watson. He had 21 catches for 266 yards, seven games, 21 catches. And with, with Jamis five games, 33 catches for 614 yards. It’s not just the 200 some yards the other day. His worst game with Watson is 73 yards. His best game, excuse me, his worst game with Jamis is 73 yards, which matches his worst, his best game with, in other words, his best with Watson. Is this worth with Winston? David Campbell (25:14.712) So there’s the phrase in baseball that like, don’t just throw a rookie on here. I need a professional hitter or I need a professional outfielder. And like the Browns finally have like a professional looking NFL offense. It’s when, when they made the switch at quarterback, when they had to make the switch at quarterback and that you’re right, Terry, that changes everything. The, the, the time of possession, the points on the board, the defense, like you said, they realized they have a chance to win a game. Terry (25:21.671) Yeah. Terry (25:43.218) Yeah. David Campbell (25:43.65) when they take the field now as opposed to before. This should have been the baseline for the whole season, like a competent professional offense. And Brown’s fans had to wait so long for them to get something that was a competent NFL offense. took forever. Terry (25:52.952) even if they’re stumbling around it, yeah. Terry (26:01.626) And it just show that no matter how many coaches you fire, how many offenses you change, if your quarterback can’t do it, it doesn’t matter. And to actually think you can come back with him coming off an Achilles injury, by the way, was watching ESPN to give them credit for it. And I think it was Dan Graziano or one of the really sharp guys there was talking about Kirk Cousins. and Aaron Rodgers, both coming off Achilles surgeries. mean, neither were particularly mobile to begin with, but they’re almost stationary now. And of course that’s what D’Shawn has. So, you know, connect the dots. David Campbell (26:49.314) Yeah, well, I think the only question is will they keep him around or not next season? Terry (26:53.584) I mean, I don’t care if they have them sitting at home and they’re paying him for whatever reason to, I mean, he’s going to get paid anyway to whatever salary cap machinations they have to do, but you cannot do that. And my view, unless somebody wants to throw a ton of money at Jamis, I want Jamis back, whether he has to start a few games early in the year to break in somebody, or he has proven that he can, You know, be support, whoever the quarterback is. mean, all he did was support Watson. He’s watching those tapes. He has to know how awful this is and thinking, man, at least I, I tell Jerry, Judy just run down there. We’re going to try one, you know, bring some life into this situation. We’ll try to that one. If he runs, all right, I’ll throw one to Joe Flacco. Remember Flacco didn’t phase them either. And granted sometimes that catches up for you. No, he’s not going to lead you to a title. David Campbell (27:37.678) We’re gonna try two. Yeah. Terry (27:50.652) But it was imperative that they bring some order to this situation. And, David Campbell (27:59.182) Alright, so we have an email that’s related to this, Terry, from a long time listener, Brian Kirkendall, and Brian says, I don’t want to overreact, but let’s sign Jameis up for the next three years. He has improved so much since the first game he played. Remember, he came in cold his first game, zero plays in preseason, didn’t play the first seven games. Yes, the second pick six last night was a bad pass and behind the receiver. I get it, but I’ve seen enough that if we give Stefanski and him an off season together, we will have the best full season, not including Flacco. That was five games since Baker’s rookie year. In the end, who will fit what they need better at the right price? Give Kevin a chance with some QB stability while they pay off to Sean Watson. What do you think of three years, Terry? Terry (28:29.138) Yeah. Terry (28:42.46) I don’t know about that. Well, it depends. You know how those structure that a year and a half would be guaranteed. Sure. Depending upon what it is. And this is not to put him up. First of all, it’d be an, I’ll ask people to even send in their list if they want. How many people, excuse me, how many quarterbacks in the NFL or how many teams would you say have competent quarterback play? David Campbell (29:09.804) Right now in the NFL, I would say 20. Terry (29:10.098) Out of 32, yeah out of 32. Yeah, that’s my number. Barely more than half. 16 would be half. The other 12 are searching desperately. Cleveland, of course, being on my map, but that’s why, yeah, if you’re comparing Jameis to the elite quarterbacks, he doesn’t come close. But if you’re comparing it to some of these other guys, he gives you a chance to win. And also his intangibles are real. There was Sean Payton talking about him just like Todd Monk and it now those are two grizzled hardcore coaches. I mean, they do not tolerate nonsense and they just, say he’s a genuine guy. You know, we liked having them all that stuff. I mean, my goodness, they signed him the second time around at, it says, I think it was a two year, $20 million contract. I think 15 million guaranteed. Yeah. Something like that. You know, like. They could do now because I don’t want to hear then all we got to pay Watson this so we have to bring in a guy for three million dollars and get our brains beat it. mean, please. We can’t because you know what it does. It doesn’t allow you to develop your other players on offense. By the way, I thought the offensive line was horrible. No, I mean, remember that that also came out of the the walls Watson experience. David Campbell (30:21.964) Yeah, you can’t do that. David Campbell (30:28.462) All right, so yeah, go ahead. Brown’s offensive line. David Campbell (30:37.131) yeah, yeah. Yeah, I was going to say I thought they played pretty well last night, all things considered. Terry (30:40.242) Yeah, and they’ve been pretty well for Watson, for Winston most of the time. David Campbell (30:45.152) Yeah, and the ball’s coming out and it’s being pushed downfield. Anyway, there’s some numbers here, Terry. I just wanted for those just to recap. So Winston last night, 34 of 58 for 497 yards, which is a Brown single game record. Four touchdowns, three interceptions, 88.1 passer rating. Judy, 13 targets, nine catches, 235 yards. And I think ESPN showed a stat last night. That is the most yardage for an NFL receiver against his former team. Terry (30:50.098) Yeah. David Campbell (31:14.284) in the history of the NFL. And here’s industry. Terry (31:14.342) Mm-hmm Yeah, he had fun what some fans were bothered by that I thought that wasn’t good fun what he was doing you know at the ears and all that Yeah, that didn’t bother me. That was like whatever I mean, this is not like cheap shots on the field where you know people do that so By the way, if people have not read Mary Kay story on Jerry, Judy I’m gonna put it in my newsletter or whatever. It is fabulous the hurt it both of his parents from David Campbell (31:21.586) yeah. Yeah. David Campbell (31:30.287) for sure. It was good fun. Terry (31:42.512) His mom from Haiti and how he grew up. It’s real insight and his sister with, forgot the name of the disease. It’s, it’s very moving, very powerful. Yeah. Yeah. I never heard of this thing. Yeah. And it’s really worth reading. go ahead. What else? David Campbell (31:51.407) It’s Tressome13, I got the name wrong, but they showed it during the game last night, yeah. David Campbell (32:01.102) Definitely check that out. I’m glad you mentioned that, Terry. It was an outstanding story. I just was going to ask you, who do you think led the Browns in targets last night? Something that might’ve been overlooked in all the commotion. Yeah, he had 17 at nine catches and 52 yards. Terry (32:10.8) The Joko? yeah. that’s by the way, now let’s just play. Here’s my analytics. Okay. You ready? If I know, Winston’s my starting quarterback and I know I’m facing the second ranked defense in the NFL and I know he’s going to throw 58 passes. What do I think is going to happen in terms of interceptions? David Campbell (32:18.976) Alright. David Campbell (32:40.578) There’s gonna be some. Terry (32:41.968) Yeah. You’re just asking for it. Three, four, whatever. You’re throwing 58 passes and you’re not, you know, throwing passes to just throw passes and complete as somebody would call, tell me, I, I forgot. Well, I forgot what the bronze quarterback it was, but another player called them to me, check, check down Charlie, you know, check, just throw it there so he doesn’t get sacked. You know, third and third and 12 and he throws a three yard pass. Yeah. And with no chance of it. So when you do that, you are, as they say, asking for trouble, but also he’s looking at it. They couldn’t run the ball and they were facing the number two defense. Now the teams that he is faced in his five starts, they are combined 37 and 25. And he has faced three of the top five defenses in the NFL, Pittsburgh, Denver, and the Chargers. David Campbell (33:11.564) And you pick up, yeah, pick up three yards, yeah. David Campbell (33:39.31) Well, here’s another stat that I found overnight. There are quarterbacks in NFL history who have had 400 yards passing, four touchdowns and three interceptions, right? He’s the first player in the Super Bowl era who had 400 passing yards, four plus passing TDs and multiple pick sixes thrown in a single game. He’s had two of those. So there’s a bunch of guys who have done that one time where they had 400 yards, four passing touchdowns and multiple pick sixes. Patrick Mahomes has had one, Deshaun Watson had one, Eli Manning, Carson Palmer. There’s some pretty elite company here. Dan Marino, Jake Plummer, Gus Ferrat. Terry (00:14.667) Yeah, well you have to be good to throw you have to be good to throw for 400 yards David Campbell (00:20.822) Yeah, and James has had two now, so he leads the all time list on that. So I thought that was pretty interesting. Terry (00:26.729) Well, all right, I’m going to say this. Now, two of the pick sixes were on what I call low-award, high-risk passes. And I’ve talked about these, think, before. I call them sideways passes. It’s like three or four yards beyond the line of scrimmage, but you’re throwing like 25 yards to get it to him. If the guy catches it, he probably doesn’t get a big gain. And if it’s picked off, nobody’s anywhere near him. And I remember in training camp, sitting there with the late Jimmy Donovan, and they kept practicing these things over and over again. And they kept throwing them in that scrimmage against Minnesota. And I said to Jimmy, what is this? He goes, that looks like a big part of the offense. I goes, I was at the whole time at Greenboro prior. They just kept doing it over and over. go, it’s terrible. And he said, yeah, once in a while because I don’t it looks like it’s a big centerpiece David Campbell (01:29.986) Yeah. And he, he knows, I mean, he was despondent last night after the pick sixes and everything and just was saying he was praying for that. wouldn’t happen anymore. But he, like, if you, you’ve got to get, if you’re going to miss, you got to miss high and outside on that pass. But football is really interesting, Terry. And I I’m trying to think of another sport. Like if you screw, if you screw a play up in basketball and turn the ball over, like the worst thing that happens is like you give up a three pointer, right? Terry (01:33.139) Yeah, of course it was. Terry (01:39.474) Yeah Terry (01:43.827) Yes, you do. Yeah. Terry (01:57.055) Mm-hmm. Yeah. David Campbell (01:57.538) But like in football, you, if one thing happens, it can be, it can turn into something huge. And on the first pick six, Jack Conklin, was a three man rush by the Broncos and Jack Conklin had his guy blocked. And then he just stopped. He just stopped blocking him because he thought the play should have been done by then. And that pressure was what forced Winston to throw the ball when he did it, which caused the pick six and they had everything blocked up. And it’s just, you’ve got to. Terry (02:24.117) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (02:27.202) You’ve got to hold your block for 10 seconds if you need to. And we’ve talked about this, like they usually know where Jamis is going to be, but they don’t know when he held onto the ball last night and made some big plays because of it. But on a three man rush, you can’t just quit. And that turned into a touchdown for the Broncos. So that was one little thing that I thought hurt the Browns. And here’s a little thing that I think was really cool to see last night on the Nick Chubb touchdown pass. Terry (02:30.56) Yeah. Terry (02:36.533) Yeah. Terry (02:43.273) now. David Campbell (02:54.316) The Browns shifted Chubb out of the backfield and put him on the left flank, like tight. And I’m watching it and the Broncos, you could see them all pointing them and I’m yelling at the TV like, nobody’s got Nick Chubb. Nobody’s got him accounted for. And the, that was a situation where Ken Dorsey and Kevin Stefanski saw that, saved it for that point of the game. And it was just a little formation tweak that created a wide open guy for a touchdown. I thought that was some really good football right there. So. Terry (02:56.756) Mm-hmm Yeah. Terry (03:07.391) Yeah. Terry (03:22.995) I mean, to the point is these two guys now, Dorsey and Kevin, and I will say this is primarily Kevin’s stuff, have a quarterback they can work with. And I think we’re going to leave it at that. David Campbell (03:38.348) Yeah. So to wrap up Browns, Terry, you wrote a column over the weekend kind of saying what you want we’ll be looking for the rest of the season, right? And you had some bullet points. And I just wanted to run through them real quick and get a yes or no. So the first bullet point you asked in your column was, the offense continue to show life with Winston? That’s a yes, right? Can Jerry Judy continue to display major promise with Winston throwing him the ball? That’s a yes. Terry (03:46.621) Yeah. Mm-hmm. Sure. Terry (03:56.893) Of course, yeah. Terry (04:03.019) especially if you, yeah, and it wasn’t just Denver. He’s had good games too before that with Winston. David Campbell (04:09.932) All right, can the team compete with enthusiasm even as their playoff chances are nearly zero? What did you see on that front last night? All right, can Stefanski keep the attention of the players? Can Winston continue to thrive? Yes on both of those, right? And then you close that up by saying you wrote that you expect at least some of those things will happen over the final six games and it’ll show that the Browns main problem was Watson. So, which is kind of how we started the second. Terry (04:16.179) Absolutely. Terry (04:22.461) Yeah. Yeah. Terry (04:35.113) Yeah, yeah, the albatross is a trade, Aikman called it, you know, I’ve called it a plague or just as gloom and doom. It’s real and it needs to be, you know, eradicated. They can’t go back to that again. And if you want to fire everybody and think that’s going to make it better, it won’t make it better if you. go back to the same situation with now a quarterback coming off of Achilles with no confidence in a town where they just like are done with them. David Campbell (05:15.04) I do wonder if we might see a thing like happen in Houston where it’s just like, listen, you’re still on the roster, but don’t come. I don’t know. Terry (05:17.972) Yeah. Terry (05:21.471) Yeah, you’re on the active wrist and you can work out here if you want or whatever you want to do. David Campbell (05:26.764) Yeah, well, we shall see. That’ll be one of the big questions of the off season. So. All right, let’s take a break here, Terry. When we come back, we will talk some Cavaliers and why Darius Garland says I’m no punk after the other night’s game against the Celtics. We’ll get into that and more when we return on Terry’s Talking. David Campbell (07:39.598) Hey, we’re back on Terry’s talking. Terry, before I forget, we had an idea last week we thought as December goes along here that we would invite listeners to email us their favorite Cleveland sports moments of 2024 and or you can do both or either one. Send us your Cleveland sports predictions for 2025. So we’ve started getting some of those and we’d to hear from as many of you as possible. So send that in. Best way to do that is an email to sports at cleveland.com. Terry (07:53.611) I David Campbell (08:08.086) and just put Terry’s talking and predictions in there or whatever in the subject line. And we will start getting to those in a couple of weeks as we head toward the end of the year. Terry (08:14.623) Didn’t we also ask, at least I did, that when someone had passed away, were they buried with something interesting? Remember that? Yeah, like, yeah, like, for example, my father, we buried him, and he had a tribe hat and a sweatsuit, because especially after he had his stroke, he loved wearing all the tribe stuff that I could come up with. And also, since I had dedicated the book to him, David Campbell (08:22.542) That’s right, yeah, we did get one of those. Terry (08:43.859) Of our, of a curse of Rocky Colivato. I buried him with that. And I know he would much rather have that because he hated being in a suit and tie because he towards the end of his time at the, where he had worked his way up to being from the line to being a daytime supervisor at the old Fazio’s warehouse. He had meetings and things where he had to throw on the tie and suit jacket and hated it. called it the monkey suit. David Campbell (08:49.612) I love that. David Campbell (09:11.149) You Terry (09:11.251) So I know he did not want to be buried in the monkey suit. David Campbell (09:16.382) That’s that’s good stuff. And so yeah, if you have any stories like that or the predictions and We got one that was really funny to a couple weeks ago. So yeah, send all that stuff to us We’d love to hear from you sports at cleveland.com. Just put Terry’s talking in the subject line. So alright Terry the Cavaliers Played the Boston Celtics in a rematch of the earlier game at the Fieldhouse and the Cavs came away with a win down the stretch 115 111 Terry (09:25.875) Okay. David Campbell (09:47.234) I guess we can talk in general about did we learn anything from that because of course the Celtics were without two of their best players. Injury slash illness, Jaylen Brown and Derek White were both out. Terry (09:58.655) Yeah, Derek and Derek White is, mean, we all, Jalen Brown is great, but Derek White is really a good player too. So yeah. And defensively he’s tough, but nonetheless, you beat the team that’s in front of you, as they say, and there were some lessons from that game. And why don’t you start with Garland? David Campbell (10:07.99) Yeah, he’s an assassin out there when he gets going. David Campbell (10:21.282) Sure. So Chris Fedor, our colleague, and he does a great job covering the Cavs along with Ethan Sands. Chris had a story yesterday about how the Celtics, and this is a topic for another day, Terry. I don’t understand why NBA teams switch so willingly. there’s not even, it’s just like two guys get close to each other. like, all right, let’s just switch, let them switch. But anyway, the Celtics were coming down the floor every time and trying to get matched up with Darius Garland and trying to take advantage of the height. Terry (10:35.259) I don’t either. Terry (10:39.819) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (10:50.964) And Tatum was going to do, they were just going to do that over and over and over. That was their game plan down the stretch the other night. And Darius Garland didn’t like that very much. And he talked about it after the game. do you want to read the quotes here? I guess I could just do it. I can’t say what I want to say. They were hunting me out every position. I’m going to take the challenge and try to make it as difficult as I can. I’m no punk. So y’all want to switch and try to X me out and try to help me out. It’s cool. Terry (11:08.779) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (11:18.07) I ain’t no punk though, I’m going to take a challenge. And then Kenny Atkinson was talking about how he, when he was watching film last year, it seems like the Cavs are trying to hide Garland defensively last season. And Kenny Atkinson said, I told him, I don’t want to hide him anymore. It’s playoff basketball. He’s got to accept the challenge. We did do some different things tactically to help him out a little bit, but we went back to our regular coverage and he got two big stops at the end, didn’t foul. Terry (11:23.435) think that’s it. Terry (11:28.469) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (11:43.778) He’s smart, he’s fast, he’s strong. I don’t see why he can be a really good defender. I don’t see why he can’t be a really good defender. He’s showing he can. So anyway, that’s all the background. Terry (11:53.035) Well, first of all, Kenny’s Mr. Optimistic. Let’s go with that. Nonetheless, he can not be a punk. How’s that? He can, in other words, get in the way, be annoying like a smaller player can. And here’s what I loved about when the Celtics became so obsessed with, and Roberta was watching the game with me. Now remember, Roberta is... Along with the knowledge of why are they running in it where everybody’s standing? Roberta played on the very first basketball team of women at Hiram college. She would go to all the games back when I was covering at home with, when during the Lenny Wilkins, when every era, she went out to dinner with Lenny Wilkins and I several times and watch Lenny draw plays and whatever. And Roberta is pretty sound on basketball. and. She was saying the same thing. Why are the Celtics look so stagnant? So then we started to look at it. And the answer was David Campbell. David Campbell (12:56.844) because they were trying to do this, right? Yeah. Terry (12:58.569) Yes, absolutely. It took them out of their game. They became obsessed with trying to get that matchup on Garland that they missed that ball handle, excuse me, the ball movement. Yes, they didn’t have white and brown, but nonetheless, they have guys that make shots. In fact, if anything, when you have only one star, you need more ball movement, not more isolation. So that really, I thought was a mistake by Joe Missoula and I’m sure. in the huddle that’s why they were really pumping up Garland now you do this because they this is what they’re going to do we want them to keep doing it so you got to handle it son and and Garland went out and on top of that Garland was back he didn’t shoot for three for 21 either he was back in on his game offensively David Campbell (13:46.22) Yeah, and Chris had this in his story, but I think he was looking at NBA matchup, NBA.com matchup data. And in the first two meetings Garland against Tatum. Tatum has 18 points on eight of 19 from the field and two of four from three point. So respectable, right? Terry (13:51.882) Uh-huh. Terry (13:59.445) Mm-hmm. Yeah, absolutely. And it just was a, I was glad to see it. You know, there’s an asterisk neck to it because they didn’t have a couple of their guys, but nonetheless, you don’t want to lose to them at home when they don’t have a couple of their stars. I mean, my goodness, go win the game. And besides Darius, that wasn’t a very important night for Garrett Darius. saw him, do you see Mitchell and those other guys really were behind him? And that’s what I like about the cat. Mitchell is a leader on that stuff. I mean, he does, it’s a natural thing for him to pick up other guys. You know, I like the, was a phrase of Mari Cooper said about Joe Flacco a year ago. He’s a faith multiplier. Or I, I talked Jimmy Donovan in life was an encouragement multiplier. Well, I see that in, Mitchell. That’s part of his deal is part of how he grew up a parent, apparently, because I think he grew up in a family where his dad was. professional ballplayer and, and it just looks like he was not a spoiled brat as a kid, even though he was a star. David Campbell (15:10.958) Yeah, I was looking at Garland’s ratings, his offensive and defensive ratings, and this is something we can kind of track. It’s still pretty early in the season, but last season his offensive rating was 108, and this season it’s 125. On defenses, yeah, yeah, and his defensive rating was 115 last season, and it’s 160 in this season. So we will keep an eye on that. See you. Terry (15:15.155) Uh-huh. Terry (15:20.683) Yeah, when you get over 120, by the way, that’s good. That’s really good. Terry (15:33.608) That surprises me because it to me seems better on defense. Is it because I’ve been more pleased with his offense? I don’t know, but. David Campbell (15:41.41) Yeah, and I think scoring is up again this year too, which may have something to do with it as well. Terry (15:44.925) Yeah, it just keeps going up and up and up. David Campbell (15:50.774) All right, well, the Cavs are going to be playing the Washington Wizards tonight at Rockett Mortgage Fieldhouse on Tuesday, December 3rd. Then they’re playing Thursday against Denver. And then Saturday, they are playing the Charlotte Hornets and that one is out of town. That would have been the 24th record tying game if they had managed. That was when we’ve been talking about, Terry, that they would have tied the record if they had kept winning. So they’re Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, this week, the first two on the road and the third one in Charlotte. So. Terry (16:10.836) Mm-hmm. Terry (16:17.661) What did you see in the Atlanta games? David Campbell (16:21.102) I just tired and, and just not all there, right. And it’s hard to get up against and day games, some day games, right. What did you see? Terry (16:27.977) Mm-hmm. Terry (16:33.909) Yeah, I do think I do think the their length Atlanta’s length where they started They started trade at the point tray young but the other guys were all six seven or taller and I thought that did create some problems for the calves and the calves are also Because of how they started they’re gonna get everybody’s best shot So they may be tired or it’s a day game or the stars aren’t lined up The other team doesn’t care. They’re coming after them. And remember them both of those games, the cast had an 18 point lead in the first game of the first quarter and the second game they were up 16 to eight. And it seemed like they just weren’t able to, they kind of backed off their thing. Now you have some stuff, Merrill’s not shooting particularly well off the bench and know, Leverton battling this knee thing. So they haven’t been at full strength, but that was a, I was a little. just unhappy with, thought they just didn’t match the intensity. Cause you look at that size Atlanta had, you better hit the boards because they were getting beat big on the boards too. David Campbell (17:45.272) Yeah, and Dean Wade might be back soon. Terry (17:48.713) It was the second game was a strange one. Where I remember where Jared Allen took like six shots and made five and played 25 minutes at five rebounds. I don’t know what was going on with him or them both. So we’ll see that, but it was nice to see that, they bounced back against the Celtics and like, let’s embrace this team. This team is fun to watch. It’s good guys. The coach is very interesting to listen to and to what he’s doing on the, on the court with the team. this isn’t all about, way to deploy us to see, no, I, this is like, This is real pro basketball the way I like it and see it even if everybody wants to shoot 5,000 threes. If they could just cut it to 3000, I feel better. David Campbell (18:29.358) So real quick, Terry, there’s, I’m trying to think about if you’re a Cavs fan and you’re excited and you buy tickets to that Celtics game the other night and you’re getting ready to go and then you hear the Jaylen Brown and Derek White are both out and like they were listed as injury illness and I, I don’t know what they had, but we’ve seen this where there’s guys, stars are getting sat because whatever reason went to a Cavs game a few years ago wanting to see Giannis play and he, they, Terry (18:42.986) Yeah. Terry (18:48.404) Right. David Campbell (18:58.456) They said I’m interested in is there anything that they can do to they’ve tried to do all this stuff about you can’t be considered for League Awards if you don’t play this number of games, but the fans are getting the short end of this and I don’t even know what they can do other than just reducing the schedule. Yeah. Terry (19:16.297) We still never do. Remember we talked about TV show. Well, they want those 82 games. the local cable system wants it. And then the networks want a bunch of the games to pick from. So no, they won’t do that. I don’t have a good answer to that. And then on top of it, the analytics people desperately trying to have the team as healthy as possible for the playoffs. Remember that game. where, it was two years ago, not last year, cause Ty Jerome was actually started against the calves for golden state. And they played a bunch of subs and, JB’s guys, they just looked terrible. And I think, I think he went for 24 against the calves at night. Ty Jerome, they probably got him the contract from Kobe Altman. I’m not saying the only reason, but yeah, he watched that thing in person go, my goodness, look at this. And he was out there kind of by himself too, with a bunch of other subs. And, you know, Popovich started all this at San Diego or excuse me, San Antonio years ago. I was sad to see, by the way, that apparently Popovich had a mild stroke of some sort. I don’t know if he’s still out. Maybe because my dad had a stroke and now my mother Melva, who’s in a nursing home, she’s with the stroke and we have another close friend of ours whose mother, I feel like I’ve lived in a stroke line for like the last 20 some years with somebody. David Campbell (20:29.612) Yeah, it’s terrible. Terry (20:45.373) I saw that and I just said, and I, cause I know the different ways and many of you listen, they probably either had it your family, maybe some of you yourselves have even had strokes, know, it manifests in different ways and the courage of those people coming back from that really always inspires me as, and so, Popovich was the first one to, I remember do these mass sit-ins with the stars. It’s always on the road just about. And as you said then, what would happen, you wanted to go see Ginovli and David Robinson or whoever it was back then, and they’re not playing. David Campbell (21:24.814) Yeah, there’s gotta be something that they can do. don’t know. One of the cool things about European soccer is like you get relegated. If you finish in the bottom four or the bottom three, depending on what league you’re in. I, I’m just, I just, these, these owners have invested so many billions in these teams. Like they would never want that either. So I just, I don’t know what the solution is, but we’ll think about it. If you have any solutions for that, send us an email. We would love to bring this topic up and talk again, cause we want what’s best for the fans. So. Terry (21:32.402) Yeah. Terry (21:44.458) No. David Campbell (21:55.352) Alright, some baseball, Terry. Matthew Boyd is going to be a... yeah. Terry (21:58.933) First of all, first of all, if you haven’t read my story on our, it should be our future Hall of Famer, Paul Hines. This is your moment. You must find it and read about Hinesy. And you know, for all of, this is what I really wanted to stress in the story. Of course, there’s some funny stories about Paul. There always are. But lost in some of that, because he’s such a character and he’s so self-effacing and tells jokes on himself and stupid things he’s done, is, and you know this, David. David Campbell (22:05.843) yes. Terry (22:28.831) what a wonderful writer he is and how determined he is to break stories. And I wrote in my story, if writing for me was even like half as hard as it looks for Paul, I’ve watched Paul, it’s like, I swear, it’s like somebody stuck a knife in his ear. I mean, a man seems to be bleeding through his eyes and he’s over the keyboard, but he just wants to get things right. And he... I really believe this because I did baseball for basically five and half seasons in the major league level. you end up, Sheldon Oker, who is in the Hall of Fame for the Akron Beacon Journalist, told me, and he told Hoyes too, if you could do baseball, you could almost just about cover everything because you end up covering just about everything from economics to tragedies to whatever comes from being around the law and order, all that stuff. David Campbell (23:23.246) Law and Terry (23:26.775) And Hoynes, we got to get them in. I don’t know. It’s he’s an underdog in this time. think Thomas Boswell from the Washington post is probably the favorite. The baseball writers voted. I voted for Hoynes and I try to get a couple of my friends to vote for Hoynes. And the third one was Bruce Jenkins from San Francisco, who’s more like both. The one thing that I would argue is like Boswell and Bruce Jenkins are more like I am in that they. They weren’t on the beat for a long time like coins. They were became more general columnist. And I really think that award should go to a hard. Yeah, it should go to a hardcore baseball guy. So we’ll see. David Campbell (24:01.462) and books too. David Campbell (24:07.886) Yeah, well read that story. It’s excellent. And there’s so much written richness to it. It’s at cleveland.com slash Pluto. And just to add onto that, there’s people in all walks of life who get a job and they’re like, all right, I’ve got this job. I’m going to keep doing this job for 30 years. And they just keep doing what they do. One of the great things about Hoynsey is that he is so devoted to writing. As you mentioned, like he, he brings books about writing with him and he’s always trying to think about the craft and trying to. Terry (24:22.869) Yeah. Terry (24:30.485) Mm-hmm. Terry (24:36.639) Yeah. David Campbell (24:37.578) evolve as a writer and try new things and for someone who’s been doing as long as he has to not think that their writing journey finished, you know, when they got the beat, it’s impressive just his dedication to the craft of writing and how much he thinks about it. That’s one of things I love about him. Terry (24:55.635) And people, I’ve got a bunch of emails and just about everybody in MetaLine has just said how engaging he is and how much fun he is. And I keep telling Paul, you can’t quit, because then I’ll be the oldest guy on the cleveland.com thing. We can’t have this. David Campbell (25:09.486) And just to Hoinsley is up for the Hall of Fame award that is given annually to Beat writers and we should have an answer on that this month. So there will be voting and then an announcement. we wish him great luck in winning that. So, all right. Thanks for bringing that up, Terry. I was wanting to get to Matthew Boyd because that was the big news of the week in terms of the guardians pitching staff. shouldn’t be surprised. Terry (25:35.496) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (25:39.416) but he is heading to the Cubs for two years. 30 million, I think that was the deal. A big loss, right? After the Guardians pulled him in middle of last season and really got some great performances from him. Terry (25:43.264) Yeah. Terry (25:47.189) Yep. Terry (25:52.371) Yeah. Scott Boroughs ought to send the guardians like a 10 % of that or whatever, because they really got him back on track. And boy talked about how the guardians handled him. Remember he was here for almost a month before he pitched in the majors. I remember right away, in fact, on the podcast, you and I were talking about two or three games in, I’m looking at these numbers and you know, he’s pitching three innings and striking out seven. I’m going enough, bring them up. But. David Campbell (26:21.644) And they did right after, I think. Terry (26:21.803) Boy, yeah, but it was like, would thought more. would have brought it up even. think I said, I said, I would have brought it up even earlier, but boys said he appreciated that, that they didn’t, they knew their time thing was short. And at that point, primer to the, the guardians started to go on a bit of a slump in, July and August. And they, they gave him time to strengthen his arm and get his confidence back. And. He was their best starter in the playoffs. David Campbell (26:54.97) there’s no doubt about that. How concerned are you about the pitching? Not just the starting pitching, I don’t think we talked very much, but last week, Eli Morgan got traded to the Cubs in exchange for Alfonso and Rosario and. Terry (26:55.657) Yeah. Terry (27:05.576) Yeah. Terry (27:11.113) Yeah, who’s an, it was a real prospect, by the way. I’m not saying he’s big time, but he’s, he’s a prospect. It wasn’t just a. David Campbell (27:16.334) Yeah, 20 years old. was looking at his numbers, for what they were. Class A Myrtle Beach in 2024. He hit 230 with 18 doubles, four triples, 16 homers, and 73 RBIs. But that was only 109 games. His OPS was 767. 20 years old. And he also stole 20 bases in 25 attempts. So you get the sense the Guardians like him. Terry (27:18.997) Yeah. Terry (27:31.723) Mm-hmm. is he like 18 or 19 or something? Give me 20, yeah. Yeah, I mean you’d like the batting average to be a little higher. Yeah, they do. And it’s you get a guy that young you you least like to see remember power comes later. So when he’s showing that power early, you know, that’s very promising. I’m always concerned about pitching. I’m like, you know, Terry Francona’s old line is like, when anybody tells them we have too much pitching, I say, yeah, go get one more. And that is really, and it’s been especially this in the age of bullpen games and starters. The last, last stat I had is I believe 37 % of major league pitchers have had Tommy John. What are the odds of that going down? They’re going up. David Campbell (28:25.794) Not good. Terry (28:27.231) Yeah. And when you have it, you are out for 18 months. By the way, remember, we’ll see if my prediction holds on Bieber getting, I predicted Bieber would get a contract like, boy got. So let’s see if he does or not. And, yeah, I’m concerned. I love boy too. He just, just such a, they always say great team, he was, I mean, he embraced the whole culture thing here. And I was trying to remember the name of the Cubs general manager. David Campbell (29:11.562) Carter Hawkins is who you’re thinking of. Yes. Terry (29:17.941) Carter Hawkins came from Cleveland. Yeah. So he, he, he, he snatched Boyd. David Campbell (29:28.526) All right. Okay. I think that’s all the baseball we have today. Is there anything else based wrong? Terry (29:34.347) Well, no, isn’t. We’ll just see if they do any. Of the Guardians are always the world’s boring team in the off season. They just are. They don’t do much of anything. They probably won’t do much of anything. They’ll make some minor deals. And that’ll be it. All right, let’s do the rotation real quick. So you got Bybee. Who else do you have? David Campbell (30:01.239) Lively. Terry (30:02.483) Lively, yeah. David Campbell (30:06.19) And then we go to, what are we looking at, Gavin Williams? Terry (30:07.683) And then you start to scramble. Gavin Williams, right? And then you’re McKenzie with the question marks all over the place. David Campbell (30:13.87) Who else are you putting in there? David Campbell (30:19.84) And same with Alan, right? Terry (30:21.393) And the same with Alan. I mean, actually... Terry (30:27.401) Well, if Gavin stays healthy, he’s got a chance to be pretty good. I think he was never really fully right all year, with that elbow. Mackenzie, I have no idea what to say. I mean, this has been two years now, he’s not right. Is Logan Allen just like a real marginal lefty, or can he figure out how to be a lefty with, you know, to work the corners and do all the things that needs to be done? know, Bybee’s big time, I think. And can lively, you know, that was a career year he had. Can he continue to do that? But you are correct in terms of how, these guys, the lack of starters and, and it, that’s that boy losing, leaving, was a real, that, that hurt. And you’re not going to get Alex Cobb again. They can’t bring him back. I mean, that he just never could get healthy. David Campbell (31:23.534) Yeah. Well, they, this is why they draft 16 pitchers every draft and see who comes out of it. So they’ve got some good young arms and they have to find a way to stretch one of those, one or two of those guys out maybe into being starters instead of in the bullpen. Terry (31:28.541) Mm-hmm. Terry (31:39.143) And you sometimes going to have to just have some patience with these guys, especially early in the season, and to see if they can get through five innings and get through 80 or 90 pitches. I’m not even going to say a hundred pitches anymore. so that you’re not just having to throw six pitchers out there every game. Just think if they hadn’t put in that rule that you had a pitch to three guys in the bullpen, you’d have like nine guys pitching every game and the games would be go back to three and a half hours. By the way, Hoynes said the greatest rule ever made. He said two things I didn’t use in the story of fun was, I don’t understand betting. I don’t understand it. What is this plus 3000, whatever. He went on one of his rants about that. Then the other is, I wish it had put the time, the pitch clock in there and all that stuff about 40 years ago when I was starting. I’d have less gray hair. I said, well, at least you have hair. David Campbell (32:31.375) man. Can you imagine? How many hours would have saved Paul Hoynes over the course of his career if they’d had the pitch clock? We’d have to add that up sometime. Terry (32:38.635) I’m yeah, well if you basically Like what hoins and I started because always started a couple years after I did the average game time Because I looked it up is right about now 236 it really didn’t start to kick into about 1990 where it got really bad and then 2000 so basically probably He was, so let’s say a half hour and they, 182 games. So, you know, you lost, don’t know about a month each year of his life. Yeah. David Campbell (33:14.414) And 40 years worth, yeah. All right, I think we’re coming down to the end here, Terry. We have a good email from Andy Getz, long time listener that we can wrap up with and there’s a Browns part of it and a Cavs part of it. Andy says, hey Terry and Dave, I have two comments to share with you. Number one, I enjoyed listening to your recent podcast when you were discussing how Kevin Stefanski really wanted Andrew Berry to become the GM in 2020. Terry (33:25.899) Mm-hmm. David Campbell (33:42.84) Stefanski initially really wanted George Patton from the Vikings to be the GM based on the time they worked together in Minnesota. Patton turned down the GM job with the Browns and then the Browns turned, really, okay. So what’s the story there? Terry (33:52.627) No, he didn’t. No, he did not. He interviewed but did not turn them down. Barry was the favorite in the clubhouse. They decided to bring in Pat and another. Also, there was a concern that Barry might go somewhere else. Philadelphia is very interested in keeping him. And there were some other jobs coming open that he was going to be a candidate for. This was an in-house thing. It was put together by Deepa Desta. And yes, they did interview Peyton. That’s correct from Minnesota. They asked him, they asked Kevin, who else would you, you know, suppose we don’t get buried. So that was really what it was. It was a backup plan, but that’s a good point. It on the surface has certainly looked like it. David Campbell (34:38.817) Yeah, and so, but the point he’s trying to get to is, Patton is now a GM in name only at Denver and Patton, is it Patton or Payton, am I saying it wrong? Okay, Patton, he’s the GM who engineered the Russell Wilson trade with the Seahawks, which has roundly been criticized as one of the worst trades ever. It’s probably just as well that Patton did not accept the Browns job. So that’s Andy’s main point there. Terry (34:46.815) Yep. I think it’s patent. Yeah. Terry (34:55.367) Right. Terry (35:00.081) Yeah, I mean, in the end, he’s got Russell Wilson and Andrew fair or not, because I always say it’s ultimately the owner’s decision. He stuck with, he stuck with Sean. David Campbell (35:12.878) All right, and here’s Perth. Terry (35:13.375) That’s a tough thing you never know with these guys, David, on these big time trades or coaches hiring. How much is the GM and how much is the owner? Okay, what else you got? Yeah. David Campbell (35:22.412) Right. And the Watson thing especially. So, all right. And part two, he says, the great start to the season by the Cavs brought back memories of the 1976-77 Cavs team, which had set the previous record for most victories without a loss to start the season. I have a story about meeting that Cavs team that season at O’Hare Airport in Chicago. I was a freshman in college that year and I just dropped off my sister at her gate at the airport. Terry (35:33.737) Yeah, they were good. Yeah. David Campbell (35:48.97) As I was walking back in the concourse, I saw the entire Cavaliers team walking to their gate to catch a flight to Portland for their next game. I couldn’t believe it. They were just off the miracle of Richfield playoffs the season before and were playing very well at the start of that season. I was surprised to see them taking a regular flight, but it was a different time in the 1970s when many teams had to economize on travel. I had the opportunity to talk with several of the players as well as coach Bill Fitch. It was a real thrill for me to hang out with them while they were waiting for their flight. Unfortunately. Terry (35:54.655) Yep. commercial. Terry (36:17.374) Yeah David Campbell (36:18.798) They lost that game in Portland. Portland went on to win the NBA title that year. And the Cavs finished that season with a disappointing 43 and 39 record. Still that team from 1976 has always been my favorite Cavs team because they were the first one to become successful since the franchise started in 1970. I still have that team picture hanging in my office. And he sent a picture, the team picture that he has. So yeah. Terry (36:41.067) Yeah, that’s cool. Well, when I started covering the NBA in 84, they were taken, still taking, first couple of years taking commercial. Cause I remember Lenny Wilkins comes up to me and he says, you weren’t tennis shoes. We really don’t want you to wear tennis shoes. Shouldn’t be wearing tennis, it’s our rule.
