Today's letter writer "Cabinet appointments" presents an open-and-shut case for what sounds like objectivity in vetting cabinet appointments: Credentials. If they've got them, they're in. So where does character fit in? Nowhere in the writer's analysis. But we all know that character matters more than job qualifications. That kind of common sense is hard-wired in all of us. History is full of "qualified" actors -- you name it, politics, sports, entertainment, education -- whose lack of character sorely and often gravely disappointed their supporters. For my money I'd take someone with little job experience and a whole lot of character over someone with great job experience and unquestionably questionable character. In their book "Becoming A Person of Influence" John Maxwell and Jim Dornan spell it out: "Credentials are transient. Character is permanent. Credentials turn the focus to rights. Character keeps the focus on responsibilities. Credentials add value to only one person. Character adds value to many." Rick Rappaport Oro Valley Disclaimer: As submitted to the Arizona Daily Star. Home for the holidays? Show relatives you care with some tech supportManchester City’s crisis deepened as they surrendered a three-goal lead late in the game to draw 3-3 against Feyenoord in the Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s side avoided the indignity of a sixth successive defeat in all competitions and looked on course for a welcome victory thanks to a double from Erling Haaland – the first from the penalty spot – and a deflected effort from Ilkay Gundogan. Yet Guardiola was left with his head in hands as Feyenoord roared back in the last 15 minutes with goals from Anis Hadj Moussa, Sergio Gimenez and David Hancko, two of them after Josko Gvardiol errors. It's time for the holidays, which means robust family conversations and seemingly never-ending courses of food. But for the more tech-savvy among us, the journey home could also mean we'll be called on to provide a backlog of tech support to parents, grandparents and other family members. And with generative AI being used to supercharge some major cyber scams this year, it's also a good time to teach and not just fix. Here are some tips on how to manage your tech encounters this holiday season: Whether it's Windows, macOS, iOS or Android, simply keeping your operating system and apps up-to-date will help protect your family's computers and devices against a surprising number of security threats, such as malware, viruses and exploits. Most operating systems, especially those for mobile devices and their app stores, typically have auto-updates turned on by default. Be sure to double-check the device to make sure it has enough storage space to carry out the update. (More on this below.) Keeping apps updated may also reduce the number of "Why isn't this app working?" type of questions from your relatives. Chances are someone in your family is going to have a completely full mobile device. So full, in fact, that they can no longer update their phone or tablet without having to purge something first. There are many approaches to freeing up space. Here are a few you can easily take without having to triage data or apps. According to some admittedly unscientific studies, the average person has hundreds of passwords. That's a lot to remember. So as you help your relatives reset some of theirs, you may be tempted to recycle some to keep things simple for them. But that's one of the bad password habits that cybersecurity experts warn against. Instead, try introducing your forgetful family member to a password manager. They're useful tools for simplifying and keeping track of logins. And if you want to impress a more tech-savvy cousin or auntie, you could suggest switching to a more secure digital authentication method: passkeys. As scammers find new ways to steal money and personal information, you and your family should be more vigilant about who to trust. Artificial intelligence and other technologies are giving bad actors craftier tools to work with online. A quick way to remember what to do when you think you're getting scammed is to think about the three S's, said Alissa Abdullah, also known as Dr. Jay, Mastercard's deputy chief security officer "Stay suspicious, stop for a second (and think about it) and stay protected," she said. Simply being aware of typical scams can help, experts say. Robocalls frequently target vulnerable individuals like seniors, people with disabilities, and people with debt. So-called romance scams target lonely and isolated individuals. Quiz scams target those who spend a lot of time on social media. Check our AP guide on the latest scams and what to do when you're victimized. Home internet speeds are getting faster, so you want to make sure your family members are getting a high-speed connection if they've paid for one. The Gamecocks (5-1) lost for the first time since April 2023, when Caitlin Clark and Iowa beat them in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. Te-Hina Paopao scored 18 points and Tessa Johnson scored 14 for the Gamecocks, whose road winning streak was third-longest in Division I history. It was the first time UCLA took down a No. 1 team in program history, having been 0-20 in such games. The Bruins’ previous best wins were over a couple of No. 2s — Oregon in 2019 and Stanford in 2008. Elina Aarnisalo added 13 points as one of five Bruins in double figures. UCLA (5-0) dominated from start to finish, with the Bruins’ suffocating defense preventing the Gamecocks from making any sustained scoring runs. South Carolina: The Gamecocks trailed by double digits at halftime for the first time since Dec. 21, 2021, against Stanford, according to ESPN. Chloe Kitts, who averages a team-leading 14 points, finished with two points on 1-of-7 shooting. UCLA: The Bruins led 43-22 at halftime. Eight players scored and contributed to 11-0 and 7-0 runs in the first and second quarters as they shot 52% from the field. The first quarter set the tone for a game the Gamecocks never led. They missed their first nine shots and were 4 of 18 from the field in the quarter. UCLA ran off 11 straight points to take a 20-10 lead into the second quarter. The Bruins dominated the boards 41-34 and held the Gamecocks well under their scoring average of 80.2 points. South Carolina travels to Florida to meet Iowa State in the Fort Myers Tipoff on Thanksgiving. UCLA travels to the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Hawaii to play Tennessee Martin on Friday.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim dropped points for the first time in any league game he's taken control of this season, with that coming on his debut for the Red Devils against Ipswich Town in the Premier League - and one huge factor he may have to change is the application levels at Old Trafford this season, with statistics revealing that his stars only ran 102km combined on Sunday - the second-lowest tally of any United fixture this season. Amorim won all 11 of his league games for Sporting Lisbon this season prior to making the move to United, though he came unstuck against the Tractor Boys with Omari Hutchinson's goal cancelling out Marcus Rashford 's 81-second opener. It will take his side a long time to fix their problems, owing to work on the training ground, the pitch and in terms of recruitment - but Amorim does like his teams to be physical and that has produced a shocking statistic in which his stars only ran a combined 102km in Suffolk, something they will need to improve. United Mishap Laid Bare That Will Hurt Amorim As per Rich Fay on X (formerly Twitter), Amorim's men weren't at their best in terms of distance against Kieran McKenna's side , and with Amorim preferring physical, dynamic teams who stretch the pitch and show intensity , that may be an issue that needs solving almost immediately. Manchester United's Premier League statistics - Divisional ranking Stats Output Squad rank Wins 4 =12th Goals scored 13 =14th Goals conceded 13 =4th Shots Taken Per Game 13.8 =9th Shots Conceded Per Game 11.2 4th xG 20.05 11th He posted after the game: "United players ran a combined 102km against Ipswich, the second lowest distance they have ran in a match this season #mufc" Bruno Fernandes was the only United player to feature in the top 10 of all distances covered in the Premier League last season, racking up 390.39km - and as a central midfielder in Amorim's setup, how much he runs will set a precedent for the rest of the side. January signings, although needed, may be tough to come by and if Amorim is to - at the very minimum - carry his side into European contention, they will need to work harder for their rewards, with only Crystal Palace , Southampton and Everton scoring fewer goals in the top-flight so far this season. GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim won 164 of his 231 games in charge of Sporting Lisbon. That will give him food for thought going forward - but a lack of application is the first problem that Amorim must look to remedy. The new manager won’t be satisfied after his first game in charge ended in a 1-1 draw. Statistics courtesy of WhoScored . Correct as of 24-11-24.INDIANAPOLIS — There's more than just school pride and bragging rights to all that bellyaching over who might be in and who might be out of college football 's first 12-team playoff. Try the more than $115 million that will be spread across the conferences at the end of the season, all depending on who gets in and which teams go the farthest. According to the College Football Playoff website , the 12 teams simply making the bracket earn their conferences $4 million each. Another $4 million goes to conferences whose teams get into the quarterfinals. Then, there's $6 million more for teams that make the semifinals and another $6 million for those who play for the title. Most of this bonanza comes courtesy of ESPN, which is forking over $1.3 billion a year to televise the new postseason. A lot of that money is already earmarked — more goes to the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference than the Big 12 or Atlantic Coast — but a lot is up for grabs in the 11 games that will play out between the opening round on Dec. 20 and the final on Jan. 20. In all, the teams that make the title game will bring $20 million to their conferences, all of which distribute that money, along with billions in TV revenue and other sources, in different ways. In fiscal 2022-23, the Big Ten, for instance, reported revenue of nearly $880 million and distributed about $60.5 million to most of its members. The massive stakes might help explain the unabashed lobbying coming from some corners of the football world, as the tension grows in advance of Sunday's final rankings, which will set the bracket. Earlier this week, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark lit into the selection committee, which doesn't have a single team higher than 15 in the rankings. That does two things: It positions the Big 12 as a one-bid league, and also threatens to makes its champion — either Arizona State or Iowa State — the fifth-best among conference titlists that get automatic bids. Only the top four of those get byes, which could cost the Big 12 a spot in the quarterfinals — or $4 million. “The committee continues to show time and time again that they are paying attention to logos versus resumes,” Yormark said this week, while slamming the idea of teams with two losses in his conference being ranked worse than teams with three in the SEC. The ACC is also staring at a one-bid season with only No. 8 SMU inside the cut line of this week's projected bracket. Miami's loss last week all but bumped the Hurricanes out of the playoffs, a snub that ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said left him “incredibly shocked and disappointed." “As we look ahead to the final rankings, we hope the committee will reconsider and put a deserving Miami in the field," Phillips said in a statement. The lobbying and bickering filters down to the campuses that feel the impact. And, of course, to social media. One of the most entertaining episodes came earlier this week when athletic directors at Iowa State and SMU went back and forth about whose team was more deserving. There are a few stray millions that the selection committee cannot really influence, including a $3 million payment to conferences that make the playoff. In a reminder that all these kids are going to school, after all, the conferences get $300,000 per football team that meets academic requirements to participate in the postseason. (That's basically everyone). ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Indiana encouraged by 'total team effort' with Miami (OH) up nextAccording to Jonathan Jones , there’s a leaguewide belief that the Vikings are hopeful they will be able to keep QB Sam Darnold in 2025 and will make an effort to re-sign him. However, Jones says the team still sees first-round QB J.J. McCarthy as the quarterback of the future, so there’s a balancing act Minnesota has to pull off. “It could wind up being a Jordan Love -type situation,” one AFC executive told Jones. Jones notes if Darnold is back on a new contract, the Vikings will have to manage the situation with McCarthy, although the plan before he got hurt had always been to take it slow. Regarding Darnold’s stock entering free agency in 2025, Jones polled multiple league sources who believed his next contract would be at least $25 million per year, and how things finish for Darnold and the Vikings could push that value even higher. Jones adds one source told him Darnold plans to be selective and will heavily weigh the situation he’s signing into to try and avoid a repeat of what happened early in his career with the Jets and Panthers. Minnesota hasn’t had any contract talks with Darnold yet as the Vikings try to keep all their focus on this season, but the team has not ruled out the idea of bringing him back. Darnold, 27, is a former first-round pick of the Jets back in 2018. He was in the final year of a four-year, $30.370 million rookie contract when he was traded to the Panthers. Carolina exercised Darnold’s fifth-year option for 2022 after acquiring him from New York. He made a base salary of $18.858 million in 2022 under the option. Darnold was an unrestricted free agent for the first time this offseason when he signed a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the 49ers. He joined the Vikings this past offseason on another one-year deal. In 2024, Darnold has appeared in 14 games for the Vikings and completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,530 yards, 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He’s added 56 carries for 194 yards and a touchdown. We’ll have more on Darnold and the Vikings quarterback situation as the news is available. The huge rally for US stocks lost momentum on Thursday as Wall Street counted down to a big jobs report that's coming on Friday. Bitcoin had powered for the first time the night before, after President-elect Trump chose Paul Atkins, who's seen as a crypto advocate, as his nominee to head the Securities and Exchange Commission. The cryptocurrency has climbed dramatically from less than $70,000 on Election Day, but it fell back as Thursday progressed toward $99,000, according to CoinDesk. Sharp swings for bitcoin are nothing new, the reports, and they took stocks of companies enmeshed in the crypto world on a similar ride. After rising as much as 9% in early trading, MicroStrategy, a company that's been raising cash just to buy bitcoin, swung to a loss of 4.8%. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global fell 3.1% after likewise erasing a big early gain. Elsewhere on Wall Street, stocks of airlines helped lead the way following the latest bumps up to financial forecasts from carriers. American Airlines Group soared 16.8% after saying it's making more in revenue during the last three months of 2024 than it expected, and it will likely make a bigger profit than it had earlier forecast. Southwest Airlines climbed 2% after saying it's seeing stronger demand from leisure travelers than it expected. It also raised its forecast for revenue for the holiday traveling season. On the losing end was Synposys, which tumbled 12.4%. The supplier for the semiconductor industry reported better profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected, but it also warned of "continued macro uncertainties" and gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that fell short of some analysts' estimates. American Eagle Outfitters fell 14.3%.The recently held event saw Will Ospreay come up against his former partner, Kyle Fletcher, which was a very hard and expected match. These two traditional rivals became the fiercest enemies in this match, and everyone was holding their breath. Will Ospreay wrestled with a taped shoulder, while a confident Kyle Fletcher aimed to exploit his injury. The match was set up to deliver on being an athletic encounter and a personalized rivalry. It also felt like a bell was rung again to signal for a fight that was going to test the two men to their maximum capacity. A Royal Process and the New Jersey Spectators When the name “The Aerial Assassin” Will Ospreay popped up on the big screen, the atmosphere in Newark began to get louder. Kyle Fletcher was next, with Don Callis by his side and wearing a king’s crown and a cocky look on his face. Had Callis beside the commentary team, it turned out to be more vibrant. Supporters shouted Ospreay’s name to chants, announcing thus the showdown that many expected to be one of the hardest-hitting fights of the evening. As soon as the market opened, there was no letup in the activities. Both Ospreay, who competed with his shoulders taped, and Kyle Fletcher did not hesitate to try and land strikes on each other. Fletcher flew out of the blocks and bested his man in every which way, displaying his eagerness through, continually banging Ospreay’s drum in and out of the ropes. A sheer drop suplex on the floor showed how brutal Fletcher can be, and he nearly pinned Riddle several times during the match. Kyle Fletcher kept order, hit the neck with a dragon sleeper, performed a hanging DDT, and almost won the match. However, Ospreay, although disappointed, did not cease to do his duty by continuing to display his tremendous speed and mobility to cope with the attack of Fletcher. The tide began to turn after Ospreay nailed a massive Skytwister from the top rope to the outside, winning some rare time for himself. A Fight This Time and Increasing the Stakes Then, in the ring, the match got rather rough; it was an ultimate endurance challenge, it could be said. Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher threw chops and hard blows at each other, and both just stood their ground. Ospreay performed a powerbomb and a hidden blade kick, but Fletcher had the never-say-die attitude intact. One bumped to the ring apron, and the other followed, to which Fletcher delivered a vicious piledriver onto the steel steps in what was a physical fight seen by any observer as both competitors were dazed. However, no matter what he received, Fletcher did not accept a count-out as a win in the fight. Bringing Ospreay back into the ring, he laid into him with a sickening chain of moves, including a release piledriver and a brainbuster on the top rope. The last strike gave Kyle Fletcher a clean pinfall win, and he proved to be the future of AEW in the match. Watching that match between Kyle Fletcher and Will Ospreay provided an intriguing narrative packaged with astounding physicality and determination. Kyle Fletcher’s strong-mindedness and inventive attack proved that he could be AEW’s future down the line. When Mark Davis came in to support Ospreay after the match, the crowd appreciated the talents of both wrestlers in the match that would turn into history as a star-making one. Conclusion The triumph over Will Ospreay was another milestone for Kyle Fletcher, who revealed himself as a worthy candidate for AEW star. Although Ospreay tried to challenge Fletcher and gave a great fight to him and even performed very energetic punches , Fletcher kept himself strong, and the so-called ‘elite style wrestling’ made him emerge the winner, which was quite a brutal theme anyway. The match in general helped AEW put Kyle Fletcher higher on the card and also brought out the hatred between the two men. After the match, fans supported Ospreay; this rivalry is just beginning , and both will progress in the AEW promotion. INDIANAPOLIS — There's more than just school pride and bragging rights to all that bellyaching over who might be in and who might be out of college football 's first 12-team playoff.
