(Reuters) - Reddit has resolved a problem with its website, the social media company said on Thursday, after an outage impacted thousands of users for about an hour. The outage began around 10 a.m. ET and affected more than 70,000 users in the United States at its peak, according to Downdetector.com, which tracks outages by collating status reports from several sources including users. "An update we made caused some instability. We reverted and are seeing Reddit ramp back up," the company said in an emailed response, a day after announcing it had fixed a software bug that was preventing tens of thousands of people from accessing the platform. Reddit's status page confirmed the latest issue that affected its website at 10:51 a.m. ET. Co-founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005, Reddit is a platform where users share links and participate in discussions within interest-based communities called subreddits. Nearly 2,000 bodies have been exhumed from a sports field at a Tasmania boarding school - with some buried six people deep - in what is believed to be Australia’s largest mass exhumation. Contractors working at the prestigious Hutchins School in Hobart – one of the oldest schools in Australia – discovered human graves buried underneath the hockey field while carrying out construction work in March. The site had previously formed part of the Queenborough Cemetery before the Hobart City Council took over ownership in the early 1900s. After nine months of evacuation, a total of 1,973 remains have now been exhumed, a notice published on the school’s website reads. 1,973 remains were exhumed at the site of Hutchins School in Hobart. However, the notice stated: “In many instances, it has not been possible to determine the separate identity of individuals within family plots.” The school has published a list of those identified on its website, with the deceased ranging from infants to 99 years old. Some remains are believed to date back to the 1800s. An archaeology team worked to identify 87 per cent of the remains. Picture: Nikki Davis-Jones Cemetery turned boarding school It’s believed up to 13,000 people were buried at the Queenborough Cemetery between 1873-1934, the ABC reports. Hobart City Council took over the site of the cemetery from a private company in 1917 before the school purchased the site in the 1960s as part of a deal which stipulated the council would fund the cost to exhume up to 1,900 bodies. Hutchins principal Rob McEwan said in a letter to parents earlier this year that the school had been aware that approximately 1900 exhumations had occurred at the site before 1961, The Mercury reports. “It has now become clear very few of the previous exhumations had occurred on the site of the current building works,” he said. Queenborough Memorial Reserve near the school site. Picture: Nikki Davis-Jones Historical archaeologist Brad Williams said the team were surprised to discover how many bodies were buried on the site. “I thought we could be dealing with a couple of hundred [people’s remains],” he told the ABC. “What we hadn’t expected was the amount of stacked burials that we found ... sometimes up to six people deep.” Hundreds of bodies are believed to still lie underneath the school, with archaeologists only exhuming about 15 per cent of the site of the cemetery. The school said the exhumed remains have been transferred into new coffins and will be reburied at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery in late January. A service will be held at a later time. Their identified names of the declasses will be included on new memorials at the Cornelian Bay and the Peel Street Memorial Reserve. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston named an expanded 21-member cabinet Thursday during a ceremony in downtown Halifax that excluded reporters in a departure from a long-standing tradition of open coverage. In an address that was livestreamed, Houston said his newly re-elected government would continue to deal with issues that matter to Nova Scotians, including health care, housing and affordability. “This term will also be very focused on growing our economy and continuing to lower taxes,” the premier said. “We have to grow our economy to be better able to support the services that Nova Scotians have a right to expect.” Before the election, in which the Tories won 43 of the legislature’s 55 seats, Houston led a 17-member cabinet. The government allowed only one television outlet to have a pool camera at the ceremony held at the Halifax Convention Centre, citing “limited capacity” inside the building that occupies a full city block. Journalists who tried to enter Thursday were turned away by building security. Houston was asked by reporters as he arrived why the media were not being given access to the new cabinet members. “It’s all live streamed ... It’s a really exciting day, you guys have lots of access, and you guys know that,” he said. Reporters were allowed to attend the swearing-in ceremony held at the same venue after the Tories were first elected in 2021, although it was during the COVID-19 pandemic and they were placed in a separate room to monitor the event before interviewing ministers. In the new cabinet, Houston will be joined by veterans John Lohr, who becomes finance minister, Becky Druhan, who moves from education to justice, and Michelle Thompson, who continues as minister of health. There are five new members, including political newcomer Leah Martin as minister of Communications Nova Scotia and L’ nu affairs and Fred Tilley, a former Liberal who crossed the floor just before the Nov. 26 election and becomes minister of public works. The other new ministers are Dave Ritcey in the tourism portfolio, Nolan Young, who is minister of labour, and Scott Armstrong as minister of opportunities and social development — formerly the Department of Community Services. In another departmental change, veteran minister Colton LeBlanc will head the new Department of Growth and Development, which was formerly known as economic development and will now also oversee housing. Composed of 14 men and seven women, the cabinet will see Barbara Adams return as minister of seniors and long-term care and serve as deputy premier. Tim Halman retains the environment portfolio and Tory Rushton stays on in natural resources, while Kim Masland moves from public works to the Department of Emergency Management. The former community services minister, Brendan Maguire, takes over education and also assumes the duties of advanced education from Brian Wong, who was dropped from cabinet along with Susan Corkum-Greek, the former minister of economic development. Alex Marland, a political scientist at Acadia University, said the government could have found room for reporters had it wanted to. “This isn’t a new government, so there are some experienced hands who at a minimum could have been made available,” Marland said. He added that in general, there are governments that feel the need to control their message, and that also tend to be cautious with newer ministers who lack media training. “If this is a pattern and it persists, that’s going to be a problem for the Houston government,” he said. “But if this is a one off and by January things are a little different because people have gone through media training, then a lot of it will be forgotten.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 12, 2024. — With files from Lyndsay Armstrong

The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .Hackers hit Rhode Island benefits system in major cyberattack. Personal data could be released soonThousands of people took to the streets of the Slovakia capital Thursday to protest against Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova who has dismissed several heads of major cultural institutions and halted projects steered by LGBT+ associations under the pretext of promoting "Slovak culture". Simkovicova, a 53-year-old former television anchor, has been a controversial figure since taking office in October 2023. "I am frustrated and very angry about the way culture is being destroyed and organizations are falling apart," Svetlana Fialova, a 39-year-old visual artist and lecturer, told AFP. "What is happening in Slovakia is ... what is happening in Georgia, Hungary and other countries, where people who collaborate and play to Russian tunes are coming to power and trying to suppress democracy and culture," she said. "The culture of the Slovaks should be Slovak -- Slovak and none else," Simkovicova said in one early speech. Nominated by the nationalist Slovak National Party (SNS), she has also slammed "LGBT+ ideology" for causing Europe to "die out". Her views have appealed to Prime Minister Robert Fico from the centrist Smer party, whose objections to liberal values echo Viktor Orban, the prime minister of neighbouring Hungary. Simkovicova had worked notably for the Slovan TV channel, known for spreading conspiracy theories, xenophobia and pro-Russian views. Slovak National Gallery director Alexandra Kusa lost her job in August in what opponents said was part of Simkovicova's purge. "Culture ministry staff accompanied by a lawyer showed up in my office one day with a bunch of flowers and a notice," she told AFP. Kusa, who has been reduced to the post of exhibition curator, said the ministry had launched a derogatory campaign against her. She says she was punished for backing Matej Drlicka, the National Theatre director, who was sacked a day earlier. The head of the country's heritage institute was dismissed this week. "We are not compatible with the ministry. Their idea of culture is completely different from ours," Kusa said. She accuses the ministry of launching "an era of bullying and intimidation". "It's pure destruction and demonstration of power. It's terrible." The ministry did not respond to AFP's request to comment. Simkovicova also targets public media. In June, she pushed through a law reforming the state-run RTVS broadcaster into a new company, STVR, which is under her control. Analyst Pavol Hardos told AFP that wielding political influence over cultural institutions had a precedent in Slovakia. "This is something we experienced in the 1990s during the illiberal regime of Vladimir Meciar, when there were ideological tests and tests ... of who is a good nationalist, a good Slovak, and who isn't," he said. What is new is the government's "commitment to purge cultural institutions from anyone who is in any way perceived as potentially a political enemy", Hardos said. Open-minded and liberal people are "being targeted as a potential troublemaker, and people who are often enough real experts in their areas are being sidelined or thrown out," he added. Hardos said that while it was premature to talk about "an illiberal regime", Fico is walking in Orban's footsteps. The government is also targeting LGBT+ rights organisations. Early this year, Simkovicova said they would not get "a cent" from her ministry. She has recently curbed public subsidies for LGBT+ groups. "This concerns any project with links to LGBT+," said Martin Macko, head of the Iniciativa Inakost NGO. He said attacks on the minority were growing, as were the number of people being treated by the NGO's therapists. The situation has incited protests among artists, cultural institution staff and the public, who turn their backs on directors named by Simkovicova or read protest statements on theatre stages. Large rallies were held this year, mobilising tens of thousands of people. Two petitions written by artists have solicited 400,000 signatures in the EU member country of 5.4 million people. In the Slovak parliament, the opposition initiated a vote to dismiss Simkovicova, but the attempt fell through. "No culture ministry employee prevents anyone from being creative or expressing themselves," Simkovicova told the press. sc-anb-frj-kym/tw
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's government on Tuesday said it had lifted a ban on access to WhatsApp and Google Play after more than two years, the official IRNA news agency reported. The report said the country’s Supreme Council of Cyber Space made the decision in a meeting led by reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian, who has vowed to remove restrictions on social media. Iran’s telecommunication minister Sattar Heshemi in a post on X called the decision a “first step” in removing restrictions and said “the path will continue" — indicating the possibility of unblocking other services. Many people reached by The Associated Press across the capital, Tehran, and other cities said they had access to the services on computers but not yet on mobile phones. WhatsApp has been the third most popular messaging platform in Iran after Instagram and Telegram. The ban on WhatsApp and Google Play was put in place in 2022 during mass protests against the government over the death of a woman held by the country’s morality police for allegedly violating the strictly enforced dress code. The protests calmed in 2023 after a crackdown by police and security forces that led to the death of hundreds of people and the imprisonment of thousands. Iran has blocked access to various social media platforms over the years but many people in the country use proxies and VPNs to access them.Daily Post Nigeria Catholic priest raises alarm over deteriorating inter-tribal relations in Taraba Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport News Catholic priest raises alarm over deteriorating inter-tribal relations in Taraba Published on November 30, 2024 By Great Ozozoyin A Roman Catholic priest, Very Rev. Father Simon Akuraga, has expressed concern over the deteriorating relations between the various ethnic groups in Taraba State, particularly between the Tiv and Jukun. Speaking during the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Tiv traditional leadership in Bali local government council at the weekend, he expressed deep concern over the increasing tensions that have led to lose of lives and destruction of property worth millions of naira. In his paper titled ‘Exploring the Frontiers of Peace and Security by Tiv of Taraba State’, the the clergyman who recalled a time when the Tiv people lived harmoniously with other tribes in the state. He attributed the worsening relationship between the Tiv and Jukun communities to events that occurred during the 1990s. According to him, the inter-tribal conflict resulted in the displacement of people and long-term suffering, with many residents being confined to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. While urging all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize peace and demonstrate love for one another, he called for the formation of peace committees, positive parenting, youth engagement, and economic empowerment as strategies to restore and sustain harmony in the state. “Peace is not just the absence of conflict but the presence of justice,” he emphasized. The clergyman who also highlighted the urgency of extending olive branches to displaced persons, stressed the need for the relevant authorities to work round the clock to unite the various ethnic groups in the state. “There is a need to extend our hands of fellowship to our displaced brethren both morally and physically. Faith-based organizations like the Catholic Church are doing their best, but the support of everyone is essential,” he said. “The inability of people to return to their homes and access their farmland not only threatens our livelihood but also weakens our identity and unity as a people.” He also cautioned journalists and social media influencers against spreading false information, urging them to leverage technology to foster development and promote peace and unity within the society. In May 2023, a homeless man named Jordan Neely entered a New Yo rk City subway car, where he began acting erratically, scaring the other passengers by saying things such as: “I don’t care if I die. I don’t care if you die. Lock me up for life.” Neely did die, after Daniel Penny, an architecture student and Marine veteran, restrained him in a choke hold. Mr. Penny was prosecuted for manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. On Monday, a jury found him not guilty of criminally negligent homicide and deadlocked on second-degree manslaughter. The verdict, like the case, has been divisive. “You can’t do this to American heroes,” said Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), urging the Justice Department to “hold New York accountable” for trying Mr. Penny in the first place. Meanwhile, the New York City Council’s Black, Latino and Asian Caucus called Mr. Penny’s actions “vigilante justice” and blamed the gaps in the city’s social safety net.
