He glides over his hurdles and takes a lot of pegging back from the front. This is much his toughest assignment so far but he has been clocked some excellent times and looks well up to this standard. He goes on any ground and has no stamina worries. MADARA (1.50 Cheltenham, nb) He was a massive eyecatcher on debut for the Skeltons in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last month. He was a mile back jumping three out before picking up strongly to power up the hill into an ever-closing fourth. Harry Skelton takes over from his less experienced rider today and now connections know he stays, he will hopefully be ridden closer to the pace. AMBIENTE AMIGO (12.10 Cheltenham, treble) She pulled away her chances when third at Newbury last time but Harry Cobden takes over today and she will hopefully settle better on this third run over timber. She was useful on the Flat and had plenty in hand when scoring on her hurdles debut at Newcastle. There’s more to come from James Owen’s filly who gets valuable weight from the boys. She was useful on the Flat and had plenty in hand when scoring on her hurdles debut at Newcastle. There’s more to come from James Owen’s filly who gets valuable weight from the boys. The yard also run Lavender Hill Mob who was beaten at 2-7 on debut at Newcastle. He is certain to improve on that. Total Look is a threat after his debut success at Navan last month. Trainer Gavin Cromwell has a cracking record at Cheltenham and his hope comes from a useful hurdling family. Quantock Hills was a winner in France and has done well since joining Warren Greatrex. He had seven lengths in hand when winning at Fontwell last time and deserves this crack at a much higher level. Teriferma has left Joseph O’Brien with two hurdles wins on his CV. He has shown his best over this trip but faces stiffer opposition here. Moutarde enjoyed a drop in class when winning easily at Kempton last time but this is tougher. 12.40 TRANSMISSION was impressive when scoring over course and distance last time out. That was just his second run over fences in the UK and the handicapper has been more than fair with a 3lb rise. There’s more to come. Peaky Boy won on his chasing debut here over 2m4f but stormed up the hill so this longer trip should be ideal. Nicky Henderson’s hopeful jumped well and looks capable of improving past a 7lb rise in the weights. Haiti Couleurs had 15 lengths in hand when winning at Aintree last time. He wasn’t stopping at the end of an extended three miles and handled Chepstow well on debut so this track should be fine. He has solid place claims at least. Destroytheevidence got the better of Haiti Couleurs when they met in Wales and ran another decent race when second at Newbury latest. Trainer Kim Bailey is going well and he’s another in with a shout in this tricky contest. Isaac Des Obeaux was placed in Graded company over hurdles and looked in need of the run at Chepstow on return. He should do better but has a bit to find. 1.13 COCO MADEMOISELLE won a couple of times over hurdles but has always looked like a chaser and she went close on her fencing debut at Worcester. She was just pipped after the last over the 2m7f trip so this slight drop in distance should help. You would expect plenty of improvement and he is well handicapped on his hurdles form. Malaita was a winner on her last visit to Cheltenham and wasn’t beaten far at Carlisle last time. She likes this trip and looks a big price to make the frame. Theonewedreamof was last seen running on the Flat but his latest chase run was a winner at Tipperary in July. He looks potentially well handicapped for the canny Gavin Cromwell. Realisation would have won at Lingfield last time but for a mistake at the final fence. She stays well enough and has an each-way shout. Harry Cobden rides Game On For Glory and she finished last season with a fair second around here. She needed her comeback at Market Rasen and is another with place claims. 1.50 MADARA was a massive eyecatcher on debut for the Skeltons in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last month. He was a mile back jumping three out before picking up strongly to power up the hill into an ever-closing fourth. Harry Skelton takes over from his less experienced rider today and now connections know he stays, he will hopefully be ridden closer to the pace. He’s better off at the weights with winner Il Ridoto and can turn the form around with the Nicholls runner now on a career-high mark. Grandeur D’Ame was right back to his best when scoring at Chepstow on comeback in October. He was a good fourth in this race 12 months ago and can at least match that effort. Ga Law was a game second in the Paddy Power and can give another good account for in-form trainer Jamie Snowden. This New Course suits him well. With Venetia Williams in such great form, her Gemirande needs a second look. He scooted in at Ascot last time and was a solid fifth in the Grand Annual at the Festival. He’s gone up 8lb but should be competitive. Stage Star goes well around here and needed his comeback run at Aintree. He has plenty of weight but won’t be far away. 2.25 MASTER CHEWY has his sights lowered here after taking a tumble in the Grade 1 Tingle Creek at Sandown last weekend. He warmed up for that with an excellent fourth in a hot handicap at Ascot and has enough quality to defy top weight over his favourite trip. Libberty Hunter looks a threat even returning from eight months off. He ended last season with a cracking third in an Aintree Grade 1 after finishing second in the Grand Annual. Ideally the ground could be a bit softer but he should run well under Harry Cobden. Issar D’Airy has cheekpieces on for the first time after finishing fourth at Newbury last time where he was hampered. He kicked off the season with a good effort at Newbury and has plenty of pace for this trip. He won’t be far away if taking to the headgear. Triple Trade has looked rusty on both outings this season but has dropped to 5lb below his last winning handicap mark. He’s run well here before but needs to find his best. Etalon has been well beaten on his last two and is best watched for now, while Third Time Lucky didn’t show a lot on comeback here last month. He’d been off 18 months so may fare better with that under his belt. 3.00 SKYJACK HIJACK is an owner’s dream as he made it a brilliant six wins on the spin at Newcastle last time. He glides over his hurdles and takes a lot of pegging back from the front. This is much his toughest assignment so far but he has been clocked some excellent times and looks well up to this standard. He goes on any ground and has no stamina worries. French challenger Jet Blue is interesting after a couple of good runs at Auteuil. He was Grade 1 level in bumpers and his trainer has enjoyed Cheltenham success before. Clondaw General cost £150,000 and made a winning start over hurdles at Worcester in October. He’ll build on that if handling this better ground. Western Knight overcame inexperience to land a gutsy win at Ascot three Saturdays ago. He shapes as though this move up in distance will help and doesn’t have to improve much to figure. Aboutdamntime jumped like a natural when winning on debut at Carlisle last time. He needed every yard of the uphill finish there so should relish Cheltenham. 3.35 TAKE NO CHANCES was far from disgraced in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle a fortnight ago and will be happier back at handicap level. She went to Gosforth Park on the back of a 10-length Listed victory at Wetherby and has winning form over to three miles so has no stamina issues. She went close at Chepstow from 1lb lower in October and has more to come. Joyeuse came back from almost a year off with a solid third at Ascot 22 days ago. She shapes as though the step up from two miles will suit and will be fitter for that effort. Wodhooh could be overpriced given she has won Listed hurdles easily on her past two visits to England. She jumped particularly well when scoring at Donny in January and Gordon Elliott should have her fit enough to perform. Pretending led for a long way at Wincanton last time before just fading late on. She has won around here before and could hold on for a place. Georgi Girl was a good winner at Warwick on comeback last month. She has plenty of staying power and a 5lb rise gives her a chance of figuring again for the in-form Hobbs and White training team. DONCASTER 2.05 FORWARD PLAN looked rusty when fourth in the Badger Beers Chase at Wincanton last month. He won this race second-time-out last season and can repeat the feat with the bit of cut in the ground he needs. He’s only 4lb higher than his last win and always runs his race. Gaboriot did well to finish third at Aintree on return given the trip was on the short side. That was a promising effort and he’ll be a threat upped to a more likely distance. More rain would help his chances as soft ground is ideal. Kim Bailey has a good record in this race and his Does He Know has run well enough on both starts this season at Cheltenham. His last win came here and he’s dropped to the same handicap mark. That makes him a danger. Chasing Fire looked in need of the run at Cheltenham last time and should fare better here with cheekpieces going on for the first time. Straw Fan Jack was third in the Festival Plate at Cheltenham three runs ago and was rusty on comeback there last time. He’s down the weights and has an each-way shout. 2.40 WEST BALBOA can get back to winning ways returned to hurdles. She looked all at sea on her two chase runs but she’s a top-level performer over the smaller obstacles and she would be giving lumps of weight away all round if this was a handicap. This trip is fine and all ground seems to come the same to this daughter of the great Yeats. Gale Mahler is the obvious danger but she was a bit disappointing when a well-beaten third at Cheltenham last month. She gets upped in distance here and that could get her back on an even keel. Ottizzini is proven over this three-mile trip despite her blip in bottomless ground at Haydock last time out. She kicked off this season with a convincing win at Ayr and a return to that form could see her hit the forecast spot. Wynenot is another facing a stiffer test of stamina after a solid fourth at Cheltenham 28 days ago. She shapes like a stayer but will have to pull out a bit more. 3.15 NORMAN FLETCHER started this season with an excellent second at Cheltenham and built on that form when scooting in at Huntingdon last month. He had plenty left in the tank and could easily take another step forward here. Deploy To Spy is improving with every run and won on handicap debut at Aintree last month. A 7lb rise in the weights means he’ll have to improve but there’s every chance he will for in-form trainer Olly Murphy. Altobelli is interesting coming back from ten months off for Harry Fry. He kept some smart company last season and went off well backed for the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury where he ran as if he was carrying a niggle. He comes back from a fair mark and a market move would be telling. Jungle Jack looked in need of the run at Bangor last month but he needs to raise his game in this company. Lily Du Berlais struggled in a Grade 2 at Haydock on return and was a winner in her last handicap at Kelso in May. She likes this trip and wouldn’t be a shock placer. TikTok is inching closer to a potential ban in the US. So what's next?By Lauren Schwahn, NerdWallet As we get deeper into the holiday season, it may feel like your expenses are piling up. Reducing your monthly bills can be one way to ease the pressure on your budget. Lowering your bills might be easier than you think. With a phone call and a little preparation, you may be able to save money on internet, phone, cable or utility bills — and maybe others. Talking to your service providers could, for example, get you a lower rate or promotional discount, or point you toward a financial assistance program. Use these expert tips to negotiate better deals with customer service representatives. The outcome of the conversation can largely depend on when you pick up the phone. Choose a moment when you have time — and patience — to spare, so you can focus fully on the call. People should avoid calling when “they’re going to be rushed, or they’re cranky, or they’ve got a kid screaming in the background, or it’s 4 on a Friday and they’ve had a bad week,” says Teresa Murray, director of the consumer watchdog office of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. You may have better luck calling customer support at certain times of the year, too. Kenan Acikelli, who spent three years working as a customer service representative for a telecommunications company, said it was often easier for customers to negotiate bills at the end of the year or during periods such as Black Friday and back-to-school sales. “The company would run special offers during these times, and we were given more flexibility to match promotional pricing or offer upgrades to retain customers,” he said in an email interview. When you dial a company’s support number — which you can typically find on its website or your billing statement — you’ll probably be routed through an automated system first. Speaking with a live person will give you a better chance to explain your situation and discuss possible solutions. Try pressing “0” or saying “representative” to reach a real person faster. Murray recommends gethuman.com to locate companies’ customer support phone numbers and other information that can help you connect with a live representative, such as service hours and instructions for navigating the phone menu. People we talked to said that politeness is your best bargaining chip in negotiations. Customer service agents will probably be more sympathetic if you speak kindly and respectfully versus using a harsh or demanding tone. “I’ve seen people come in frustrated, but those who stayed calm always ended up with better results,” Acikelli said. “I would often go out of my way to offer them additional promotions or discounts simply because they asked kindly.” Keep your attitude in check, and remember that the person on the other end of the line is a human who’s just trying to do their job. Ahead of the call, learn what prices and deals your service providers’ competitors offer, and leverage that information, said Babu Jayaram, head of customer success and strategy at Qualaroo, a customer and user feedback software company. “It shows that you’re an informed customer, and reps often have some discretion to match or even beat those rates to keep you on board,” he said in a prepared statement. Find out whether your provider has any deals that it may be willing to extend to you. Is your cable company offering an incentive to new customers that’s cheaper than what you’re paying? Maybe you can secure that rate. A quick internet search — try something like “company name + discount” or “company name + new promotion” — may help you uncover the information you need to back up your request. Murray recommends looking into other types of discounts, too. Some companies offer age-based discounts, often starting at age 55. Paperless billing and autopay discounts are also common. Murray says she saves $5 per line each month on her five-line cell phone plan by using automatic bank payments. “That’s 25 bucks a month. So that adds up,” she says. Discounts are harder to come by for utility bills such as water and electricity, which are typically regulated and must adhere to certain rates. However, financial assistance programs may be available to people who meet certain income requirements or are struggling to manage their bills. Ask your customer service representative about any discounts, payment plans or hardship programs you might qualify for. Here’s exactly what to say on that call . Having your account details ready can save time and reduce friction on the call. Log in to your online account or check your statements for information, such as account number, plan features and past payment dates. If you’ve been a customer for a long time, consider using that information to your advantage, especially if you have a record of on-time payments . Companies value loyalty, and employees may have customer retention goals they’re trying to meet. Keeping you as a satisfied customer is in the company’s best interest. Don’t take the first “no” for an answer. Explain your situation again, and get straight to the point. For example: “I’d like to continue using your service, but I simply can’t afford to pay the price. What can we do to bring the bill down?” If you still get nowhere, try escalating the request. The representative you’re speaking with might not have the authority to lower your bill . Kindly ask to speak to a supervisor, who may have more problem-solving experience and power to make decisions. Despite our best efforts, customer service calls can lead to dead ends. Prepare for the possibility that your provider won’t budge. Ahead of the call, consider whether terminating the service is a step you’re willing to take. With some services, such as water, electricity or gas, alternative providers might not be available, but with others, such as cell phone or cable providers, competition is abundant. If ending the relationship is an option, and your representative can’t save you money, ask to begin the cancellation process. Showing that you’re serious may prompt them to make you a better offer. If that offer never comes, consider switching to a lower-priced competitor or, if the service isn’t vital, giving it up entirely. If you’re not ready to decide, keep the notes from your call and think it over. In any case, applaud yourself for making the call. More From NerdWallet Lauren Schwahn writes for NerdWallet. Former Lincoln East, Nebraska wideout Malachi Coleman transfers to MinnesotaPair of original MLS clubs to play for Cup title
The Wolverines started the season ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25, making them the third college football team since 1991 to be ranked worse than seventh in the preseason poll after winning a national title. Michigan (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) failed to meet those modest expectations, barely becoming eligible to play in a bowl and putting the program in danger of losing six or seven games for the first time since the Brady Hoke era ended a decade ago. The Wolverines potentially can ease some of the pain with a win against rival and second-ranked Ohio State (10-1, 7-1, No. 2 CFP) on Saturday in the Horseshoe, but that would be a stunning upset. Ohio State is a 21 1/2-point favorite, according to the BetMGM Sportsbook, and that marks just the third time this century that there has been a spread of at least 20 1/2 points in what is known as "The Game." Michigan coach Sherrone Moore doesn't sound like someone who is motivating players with an underdog mentality. "I don't think none of that matters in this game," Moore said Monday. "It doesn't matter the records. It doesn't matter anything. The spread, that doesn't matter." How did Michigan end up with a relative mess of a season on the field, coming off its first national title since 1997? Winning it all with a coach and star player contemplating being in the NFL for the 2024 season seemed to have unintended consequences for the current squad. The Wolverines closed the College Football Playoff with a win over Washington on Jan. 8; several days later quarterback J.J. McCarthy announced he was skipping his senior season; and it took more than another week for Jim Harbaugh to bolt to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. In the meantime, most quality quarterbacks wanting to transfer had already enrolled at other schools and Moore was left with lackluster options. Davis Warren beat out Alex Orji to be the team's quarterback for the opener and later lost the job to Orji only to get it back again. No matter who was under center, however, would've likely struggled this year behind an offensive line that sent six players to the NFL. The Wolverines lost one of their top players on defense, safety Rod Moore, to a season-ending injury last spring and another one, preseason All-America cornerback Will Johnson, hasn't played in more than a month because of an injury. The Buckeyes are not planning to show any mercy after losing three straight in the series. "We're going to attack them," Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer said. "We know they're going to come in here swinging, too, and they've still got a good team even though the record doesn't indicate it. This game, it never matters what the records are." While a win would not suddenly make the Wolverines' season a success, it could help Moore build some momentum a week after top-rated freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan. "You come to Michigan to beat Ohio," said defensive back Quinten Johnson, intentionally leaving the word State out when referring to the rival. "That's one of the pillars of the Michigan football program. "It doesn't necessarily change the fact of where we are in the season, but it definitely is one of the defining moments of your career here at Michigan." AP Sports Writer Mitch Stacy in Columbus, Ohio, contributed to this report.1 2 3 4 On Dec 20, the Ajmer Sharif Dargah Committee (DC), functioning under the Union Minority Affairs ministry, submitted a 5-page application to the Munsif Court in Ajmer, urging dismissal of a plea alleging the presence of a temple beneath the Ajmer Dargah. The court scheduled the next hearing for Jan 24. Why the Dargah committee's Dec 20 plea is significant? The Dargah Committe's (DC) plea challenged a Nov 27 plea filed by one Vishnu Gupta of Hindu Sena, on the basis of which notices were issued to it, the ministry, and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Dargah committee strongly opposed the plea, stating that the claim "does not hold ground on any legal or factual basis." While its response may be regarded as reflecting the opinion of the minority affairs ministry, legal experts have underscored the dargah committee's autonomy under the governing act and said its stance may not necessarily align with the stated positions of the ministry or ASI. However, considering that Ajmer Dargah is the only Waqf property in India to be operated under and funded by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs (MMA), the committee's response to the Hindu Sena's plea is significant. Advocate Ashok Mathur, representing the committee in court, said, "DC will plead in court as the main respondent, irrespective of what other parties admit in court." Ministry of minority affairs seeks petition copy MMA has requested a copy of the petition to file its reply, raising questions about its intent, says Shafquatullah Sultani, an advocate at the Rajasthan High Court. He criticised MMA's delayed reponse. "If MMA's stance were somewhat aligned with the DC, they would have moved an application seeking dismissal of the application on December 20. This tactic of withholding their position raises suspicions about their intent of prolonging the issue," he remarked. What happens next? Prime Minister Narendra Modi's annual offering of the ‘Chadar' to Dargah Ajmer Sharif is likely to arrive on Jan 4, through his emissary, Union minister Kiren Rijiju. During his visit, Rijiju is also set to launch a book titled ‘Operations Manual for the Conduct of Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti' at the Dargah premises. This year's Urs begins on January 2 or 3. If the ‘Chadar' is offered, it is likely to be seen as a reaffirmation of the govt's support to the Dargah, despite ongoing controversies. Modi has sent a ‘Chadar' to Ajmer Sharif annually since 2014. The next court hearing on Jan 24 may see the court decide on whether to add Dargah Dewan and Anjuman as parties to the case. The ministry and ASI are expected to submit their responses, while Vishnu Gupta's counsel may reply to the dargah committee's request for dismissal of his plea. The outcome of the case could set a significant precedent for similar petitions across India, influencing how courts address heritage and religious disputes. Stakeholders file petitions to become parties While the committee governs the Dargah, its two primary stakeholders—Dargah Dewan and Anjuman (a body of Khadims)—filed petitions to be added as parties to the case. Their petitions, submitted by Syed Zainual Abedin Ali Khan and Syed Sarwar Chishti respectively, emphasise their exclusive customary rights over the shrine. Political and diplomatic implications The Ajmer Dargah, a 12th-century Sufi shrine of Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti, holds immense spiritual significance and is revered equally by Hindus and Muslims. Questions over the existence of a temple beneath have reignited a political debate, with parties like Congress, AAP, AIMIM, and SP urging Modi govt to take a definitive stance against the Hindu Sena claim. Cong MPs Imran Masood, Mohibbullah Nadvi, AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi, and AAP's Sanjay Singh, among others, have sought the Supreme Court's intervention, and demanded that a survey not be permitted in keeping with the Places of Worship Act, which mandates that the religious character of any place of worship should remain as it existed on 15th August, 1947. Since Dargah Ajmer Sharif predates this order, observers view the matter as a litmus test for the Union govt, which must navigate between cultural heritage and communal sensitivities. Beyond the domestic context, the case also impacts the Dargah's status as an institution integral to India's cultural diplomacy among Muslims globally, particularly in South Asia. The shrine's historical and spiritual significance has long been a pillar of India's soft power diplomacy as it receives offerings from several countries. 1 2 Jaipur: In its draft regulations for determining electricity rates , Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) has set deadlines for discoms to liquidate regulatory assets. Regulatory assets arise when commissions, under state govt pressure, delay tariff hikes and allow discoms to record the shortfall between costs incurred and revenue generated. As of March 2024, Rajasthan's three regional discoms collectively hold over Rs 50,000 crore in regulatory assets, along with an additional interest burden of about Rs 5,000 crore. Power distribution companies (discoms) lack the freedom to increase electricity rates despite rising power supply costs, as the govt restrains them from raising tariffs for political reasons. Since these govt decisions amount to subsidies, the govt should pay the discoms or allow tariff increases, said stakeholders in the sector. The proposed RERC guidelines require discoms to liquidate these assets within a specified timeframe. Moreover, the draft regulations stipulate that even if regulatory assets are created, they must not exceed 3% of RERC's approved revenue requirement. Anshuman Gothwal of the Centre for Environment, Energy and People (CEEP) said that if the proposal to liquidate regulatory assets (withheld rate increases) within seven years is implemented, discoms would need to increase the retail tariff by around Rs 1.20 per unit, potentially affecting affordability for consumers. However, he said liquidating these assets is crucial for the sector's long-term viability and must not be delayed. "Postponing liability liquidation only exacerbates the sector's financial instability, weakening discoms, deterring investments, and stalling the much-needed modernisation of the network," he added. The proposed regulations provide a necessary framework to address this issue, but their success depends on strict compliance by discoms and robust enforcement by the regulator. State commissions often align with govt interests and hesitate to assert their authority to ensure regulatory compliance on such matters. Gothwal also suggested that to mitigate the impact on low-income consumers, the state govt should consider implementing targeted subsidies. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has nvited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration next month — extending a diplomatic olive branch even as Trump threatens to levy massive tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump's incoming press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed on Thursday that Trump invited Xi, but said it was “to be determined” if the leader of the United States' most significant economic and military competitor would attend. In fact it seems unlikely. Xi is likely to see the invitation as too risky to accept, and the gesture from Trump may have little bearing on the increasingly competitive ties between the two nations as the White House changes hands, experts say. Danny Russel, vice president for international security and diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said Xi would not allow himself to “be reduced to the status of a mere guest celebrating the triumph of a foreign leader — the U.S. president, no less.” Still, Leavitt saw it as a plus. “This is an example of President Trump creating an open dialogue with leaders of countries that are not just our allies, but our adversaries and our competitors too,” she said in an appearance on Fox News' program ”Fox & Friends." “We saw this in his first term. He got a lot of criticism for it, but it led to peace around this world. He is willing to talk to anyone and he will always put America’s interest first.” CBS News first reported the invitation to Xi. Asked at a Chinese Foreign Ministry briefing on Thursday about Trump's invitation, spokesperson Mao Ning responded: “I have nothing to share at present.” Leavitt said that other foreign leaders have also been invited, but did not provide any details. The move by Trump to invite a leader of an adversarial nation to the American moment that is Inauguration Day is unorthodox. But it also squares with his belief that foreign policy—much like a business negotiation—should be carried out with carrots and sticks to get the United States' opponents to operate closer to his administration's preferred terms. Jim Bendat, a historian and author of “Democracy’s Big Day: The Inauguration of Our President,” said he was not aware of a previous U.S. inauguration attended by a foreign head of state. “It's not necessarily a bad thing to invite foreign leaders to attend,” Bendat said. “But it sure would make more sense to invite an ally before an adversary.” Edward Frantz, a presidential historian at the University of Indianapolis, said the invitation helps Trump burnish his “dealmaker and savvy businessman” brand. “I could see why he might like the optics," Frantz said. “But from the standpoint of American values, it seems shockingly cavalier." White House officials said it was up to Trump to decide whom he invites to the inauguration. “I would just say, without doubt it's the single most consequential bilateral relationship that the United States has in the world,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby said. “It is a relationship both fraught with peril and responsibility.” Trump on Thursday during an appearance at the New York Stock Exchange , where he was ringing the opening bell to open the market, said he’s been “thinking about inviting certain people to the inauguration” without referring to any specific individuals. “And some people said, ‘Wow, that’s a little risky, isn’t it?’” Trump said. “And I said, ‘Maybe it is. We’ll see. We’ll see what happens.’ But we like to take little chances.” Meanwhile, a top aide to Hungarian President Viktor Orban, one of Trump's most vocal supporters on the world stage, said Thursday that Orban isn't slated to attend the inauguration. “There is no such plan, at least for the time being," said Gergely Gulyás, Orban's chief of staff. The nationalist Hungarian leader is embraced by Trump but has faced isolation in Europe as he's sought to undermine the European Union's support for Ukraine, and routinely blocked, delayed or watered down the bloc’s efforts to provide weapons and funding and to sanction Moscow for its invasion. Orban recently met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Every country's chief of mission to the United States will also be invited, according to a Trump Inaugural Committee official who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The Xi invitation comes as Trump has threatened to enact massive tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China to get those countries to do more to reduce illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. He has said that, on his first day in office in January, he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada and that China could be hit with even higher tariffs. China produces precursor chemicals used in the production of fentanyl, but Beijing has stepped up efforts over the last year to crack down on the export of the chemicals. “We’ve been talking and discussing with President Xi, some things, and others, other world leaders, and I think we’re going to do very well all around,” Trump said in a CNBC interview Thursday. Xi during a meeting with President Joe Biden last month in Peru urged the United States not to start a trade war. “Make the wise choice,” Xi cautioned. “Keep exploring the right way for two major countries to get along well with each other.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also pushed back on Trump's threats, warning such a tariffs move would be perilous for the U.S. economy as well. Trudeau earlier this week said that Americans “are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive” and said he will retaliate if Trump goes ahead with them. Trump responded by calling Canada a state and Trudeau the governor. In addition to the tariff dispute, U.S.-China relations are strained over other issues, including what U.S. officials see as Beijing indirectly supporting Russia's war on Ukraine. The Biden administration says China has supported Russia with a surge in sales of dual use components that help keep its military industrial base afloat. U.S. officials also have expressed frustration with Beijing for not doing more to rein in North Korea's support for the Russian war. China accounts for the vast majority of North Korea’s trade. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has dispatched thousands of troops to Russia to help repel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk border region. The North Koreans also have provided Russia with artillery and other munitions, according to U.S. and South Korean intelligence officials. Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration takes place a day after the U.S. deadline for ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of social media giant TikTok, to sell the social media app or face a ban in the United States. — Associated Press writers Didi Tang in Washington and Balint Domotor in Budapest, Hungary, contributed reporting.

Templegate's TV verdicts CHELTENHAM SAT 12.10 AMBIENTE AMIGO pulled away her chances when third at Newbury last time but Harry Cobden takes over today and she will hopefully settle better on this third run over timber.
