Show relatives you care with some tech supportChristmas is almost upon on us. This beautiful holiday dominates our December every year. But how do we get the most out of it? How do we prepare ourselves for it? First, pause and reflect. December is very busy for most people. There can be travel or house guests, there are presents to buy and extra events to attend. Make sure that you take a little time in these final days leading up to Christmas to stop and be still. Read the gospel accounts of the arrival of Jesus found in Matthew 1:18-2:18 and Luke 2:1-12. One way I connect with the text is to pick various characters and try to put myself in their shoes and experience the story from their perspective. One might pretend to be Joseph. Imagine the confusion and feelings of deep betrayal when Mary shares that she is pregnant. Explore the disbelief at her claims to be a virgin who will be giving birth to the long-awaited Messiah. And then trying to navigate getting out of this marriage and yet not causing Mary, who you still love, to be stoned for adultery. And realizing after God sends an angel that Mary is telling the truth. Experience the sorrow at not believing her; the attempts at repair in this relationship that you now value again with this virtuous woman that you now want to marry wholeheartedly. Then explore the anger at the Romans for making you take a long, hard trip with a massively pregnant Mary so you can register for even more taxes. Then the terror of delivering baby Jesus, for there was no OBGYN to be found. Then enjoy the surprise of shepherds showing up to greet the messiah. And eventually feel the fear as you must flee with your family before King Herod’s soldiers descend on Bethlehem and massacre all the baby boys attempting to kill Jesus. Sit back and enjoy the wonder of how God protected your family. The Christmas story is a tapestry of strong emotions crashing into one another. Pause and, maybe for the first time, actually feel the story of Christmas. Second, consider and commit to the actual message of Christmas. Christmas is not sentimentality, hope in our fellow man, or even generic generosity; there is a specific theological content to it. Christmas is the story of the incarnation. The story of God the Son, who is eternal, and part of the Holy Trinity being sent by God the Father to take on flesh and become Jesus who is both fully human and fully divine — one person, two natures. This is a stunning descent where God the Son strips off the prerogatives of deity to live fully as a human. He lives that way sinlessly for a little over three decades and offers his perfect life as a sacrifice to satisfy our sin debt to our holy creator. He predicts and on the third day walks out of his grave to prove that he is who he says he is: not just a teacher, leader or prophet but God himself. This is the message of Christmas: despite our sin and rebellion against our creator God has made a way for us to be reconciled; to be part of his family. Enjoy the eggnog. Put up the stockings, attend the Christmas parties, but do more than enjoy the feel-good side effects of Christmas — grab ahold of the actual message. One of the best summaries of the Christmas message is John 3:16 which says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” As you open your gifts this Christmas, I encourage you not to leave the greatest present unwrapped — the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In the midst of the laughter, travel, and parties, don’t miss the point. Merry Christmas!
Daniel Razionale Launches Personal Website to Share His Outdoor Adventures and Connect with CommunityLOS ANGELES (AP) — Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell says it was a really easy decision to sign with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and the presence of three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani played a part, too. Snell was introduced Tuesday at Dodger Stadium accompanied by his agent Scott Boras. The left-hander finalized a $182 million, five-year contract last Saturday. “It was really easy just cause me and Haeley wanted to live here, it’s something we’ve been talking about for a while,” Snell said, referring to his girlfriend. “Then you look at the team. You look at what they’ve built, what they’re doing. It’s just something you want to be a part of.” Last month, Snell opted out of his deal with San Francisco to become a free agent for the second consecutive offseason after he was slowed by injuries during his lone year with the San Francisco Giants. Snell gets a $52 million signing bonus, payable on Jan. 25, and annual salaries of $26 million, of which $13.2 million each year will be deferred . Because Snell is a Washington state resident, the signing bonus will not be subject to California income tax. “It just played out the way that people around me felt comfortable with, I felt comfortable with, they felt comfortable with,” Snell said. “We talked and found something that could work for both of us. You want your worth, you want your respect, and you want enough time to where you can really make a name for yourself. I've made a name for myself outside of LA, but I'm going to be invested.” Two-way star Ohtani, who signed a record $700 million, 10-year deal a year ago, had a historic first season with the Dodgers. He helped them win the franchise's eighth World Series while playing only as designated hitter and became MVP in the National League for the first time after twice winning the award while in the American League. “It helps with him in the lineup for sure. That’s big motivation,” Snell said. “You want to be around players like that when you’re trying to be one of the best in the game. Yeah, it played a big part.” Snell joins Ohtani and fellow Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto atop Los Angeles’ rotation. All-Star Tyler Glasnow will be back after having his first season in LA derailed by a sprained elbow. Ohtani didn’t pitch this year while recovering from right elbow surgery but is expected back on the mound in 2025. The rest of the rotation includes Tony Gonsolin, Landon Knack, Dustin May, Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan. “I pitched on six-man, five-man, four-man rotations,” Snell said. “I'm good with it all as long as we have a plan, we'll execute it.” Snell, who turns 32 on Wednesday, went 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 20 starts this year, throwing a no-hitter at Cincinnati on Aug. 2 for one of only 16 individual shutouts in the major leagues this season. He struck out 145 and walked 44 in 104 innings. He was sidelined between April 19 and May 22 by a strained left adductor and between June 2 and July 9 by a strained left groin. Snell won Cy Young Awards in 2018 with Tampa Bay and 2023 with San Diego. He is 76-58 with a 3.19 ERA in nine seasons with the Rays (2016-20), Padres (2021-23) and Giants. He has known Andrew Friedman, Dodgers president of baseball operations, since he was 18. In the aftermath of winning the World Series and discussing how the Dodgers could repeat next year, Friedman said, “All conversations kept coming back to Blake.” “Usually in major league free agency, you're buying the backside of a guy's career, the accomplishments that they have had,” he said. “With Blake, one thing that's really exciting for us is, as much success as he's had, we feel like there's more in there." Snell was 2-2 against the Dodgers in his career. “We couldn’t beat him, so we’re going to have him join us,” Friedman said. .___ AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB Beth Harris, The Associated Press

The Dutchman, who was out of work for just two weeks following his four-game spell as Manchester United interim boss, only started on Sunday so was happy to end a hectic three days in style. “It has been very busy getting to know everyone, start working together,” he said. “Everybody was involved with that and helping, it was busy, long days, but worth it. I was focused on the game and what the game needed, the subs, the half-time talk, so focused on the moment, so I am going to get myself a little beer and reflect on the last three days.” He endured a dream start as Vardy scored after just 98 seconds with El Khannouss and Daka adding second-half goals. It was by no means one-way traffic, though, as West Ham – who scored a consolation through Niclas Fullkrug at the death – had 30 shots on goal. But Van Nistelrooy saw enough to think he can deliver on his objective of keeping the Foxes in the Premier League. “I am very happy, if you look at the result – and it is about the result – it was a great night, three points, three good goals and also very effective. Ruud at the wheel 🛞 pic.twitter.com/eVgIwWAcYw — Leicester City (@LCFC) December 3, 2024 “Overall the game of course we have seen and how dominant West Ham were at certain stages and what they created, that is a fact and something we have to look at. “Overall, what I expected of the players going forward was togetherness and hunger, energy and spirit in this team that is fighting for every inch. “Eleven players on the pitch who are fighting as a foundation to play the rest of the Premier League. I saw that completely with every single player that started and came on. “That’s the foundation we have to build on, without that it will be impossible to get where we want to go. I am very happy about that.” West Ham’s hierarchy will have seen what impact a managerial change can have as the jury remains out on Julen Lopetegui, with away fans making their feelings clear by chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning”. Lopetegui expects to keep his job but forthcoming games against his former club Wolves, Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton could determine the Spaniard’s future. “The only thing that I am worried about is to go to training session tomorrow and stand up the players and prepare the next challenge,” he said. “We have one month of December with a lot of matches and I am sure with this attitude we are going to achieve many more points. “I believe in the players. I am confident that tomorrow we are going to be ready to prepare the next match. “Understanding the question, but at the end of the season maybe we talk in another way. There are a lot of matches and points, a lot of things can happen. “I believe in these players and team, I am sure the position is going to be much better. They are only words but we have to work a lot to achieve this.”

Australia news LIVE: Bills on the brink in final sitting week of the year; Social media giants slam ‘rushed’ ban consultationJack Callis, the 24-year-old Ravens fan who attacked two Commanders fans in Baltimore after a football game in October, will remain in jail while awaiting his trial. Baltimore Circuit Judge Yolanda A. Tanner ruled on Tuesday that Callis would remain incarcerated during a second bail review and labeled him a danger to public safety due to his cocaine and alcohol use , according to the Baltimore Banner . Callis, who is from Sarasota, Florida, was seen in a now-infamous video attacking two Commanders fans in the Federal Hill section of Baltimore, which had left one of the men with a concussion. The video went viral on social media and allegedly captured the second time Callis got into it with the two men. Warning: Graphic Language, Violence He has been indicted by a grand jury on one count of first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault. Judge Tanner expressed disappointment in the way Tuesday’s hearing had been handled while also ruling that she hadn’t heard sufficient reasoning to release Callis in order to take part in outpatient treatment for substance issues, according to the Banner. ”Instead of using the time to tell me what’s new and what’s available, it was just a catfight today,” Tanner said. “I’m just incredibly disappointed in what was presented by counsel.” Patrick Seidel, one of the attorneys for Callis, called out the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office over their decision to present the case to a grand jury just days after Callis surrendered to Baltimore Police. ”I’ve never seen that happen in any case. Ever,” Seidel said. “They’re trying to keep him incarcerated because of the high-profile nature of this case.” The defense attorney also claimed that prosecutors were trying to make Callis look like an “evil person” and “some alcohol, drug-fueled maniac.” Seidel also questioned the severity of how hurt the two men had been and claimed the attack wasn’t connected to the game saying, “There’s nothing special about it.” Assistant State’s Attorney Twila Driggins said Callis’ lawyer was “trying to malign the victims.” Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates praised the ruling on Tuesday in a statement to the Baltimore Sun. “It is clear that the court understands this and made the appropriate decision regarding bail review,” Bates said. “My office looks forward to holding this defendant accountable and delivering justice for the victims.”
BY MELISSA GOLDIN Social media users are misrepresenting a Vermont Supreme Court ruling , claiming that it gives schools permission to vaccinate children even if their parents do not consent. The ruling addressed a lawsuit filed by Dario and Shujen Politella against Windham Southeast School District and state officials over the mistaken vaccination of their child against COVID-19 in 2021, when he was 6 years old. A lower court had dismissed the original complaint, as well as an amended version. An appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court was filed on Nov. 19. But the ruling by Vermont’s high court is not as far-reaching as some online have claimed. In reality, it concluded that anyone protected under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act, or PREP, Act is immune to state lawsuits. Here’s a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: The Vermont Supreme Court ruled that schools can vaccinate children against their parents’ wishes. THE FACTS: The claim stems from a July 26 ruling by the Vermont Supreme Court, which found that anyone protected by the PREP Act is immune to state lawsuits, including the officials named in the Politella’s suit. The ruling does not authorize schools to vaccinate children at their discretion. According to the lawsuit, the Politella’s son — referred to as L.P. — was given one dose of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at a vaccination clinic held at Academy School in Brattleboro even though his father, Dario, told the school’s assistant principal a few days before that his son was not to receive a vaccination. In what officials described as a mistake, L.P. was removed from class and had a “handwritten label” put on his shirt with the name and date of birth of another student, L.K., who had already been vaccinated that day. L.P. was then vaccinated. Ultimately, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that officials involved in the case could not be sued. “We conclude that the PREP Act immunizes every defendant in this case and this fact alone is enough to dismiss the case,” the Vermont Supreme Court’s ruling reads. “We conclude that when the federal PREP Act immunizes a defendant, the PREP Act bars all state-law claims against that defendant as a matter of law.” The PREP Act , enacted by Congress in 2005, authorizes the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to issue a declaration in the event of a public health emergency providing immunity from liability for activities related to medical countermeasures, such as the administration of a vaccine, except in cases of “willful misconduct” that result in “death or serious physical injury.” A declaration against COVID-19 was issued on March 17, 2020. It is set to expire on Dec. 31. Federals suits claiming willful misconduct are filed in Washington. Social media users described the Vermont Supreme Court’s ruling as having consequences beyond what it actually says. “The Vermont Supreme Court has ruled that schools can force-vaccinate children for Covid against the wishes of their parents,” reads one X post that had been liked and shared approximately 16,600 times as of Tuesday. “The high court ruled on a case involving a 6-year-old boy who was forced to take a Covid mRNA injection by his school. However, his family had explicitly stated that they didn’t want their child to receive the ‘vaccines.’” Other users alleged that the ruling gives schools permission to give students any vaccine without parental consent, not just ones for COVID-19. Rod Smolla, president of the Vermont Law and Graduate School and an expert on constitutional law, told The Associated Press that the ruling “merely holds that the federal statute at issue, the PREP Act, preempts state lawsuits in cases in which officials mistakenly administer a vaccination without consent.” “Nothing in the Vermont Supreme Court opinion states that school officials can vaccinate a child against the instructions of the parent,” he wrote in an email. He explained that the U.S. Supreme Court appeal seeks to clarify whether the Vermont Supreme Court interpreted the PREP Act beyond what Congress intended. “The Politella’s fundamental liberty interest to decide whether their son should receive elective medical treatment was denied by agents of the State and School,” he wrote in an email to the AP. “The Vermont Court misconstrues the scope of PREP Act immunity (which is conditioned upon informed consent for medical treatments unapproved by FDA), to cover this denial of rights and its underlying battery.” Ferrara added that he was not aware of the claims spreading online, but that he “can understand how lay people may conflate the court’s mistaken grant of immunity for misconduct as tantamount to blessing such misconduct.” Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Click to share on X (Opens in new window) Most Popular German restaurant Deutsche Ecke opens in Newport News German restaurant Deutsche Ecke opens in Newport News Second man dies in Newport News triple shooting; police still looking for suspects Second man dies in Newport News triple shooting; police still looking for suspects The latest business openings and closings in Hampton Roads The latest business openings and closings in Hampton Roads Former Hampton High football coach Mike Smith highlights latest Virginia Hall of Fame inductees Former Hampton High football coach Mike Smith highlights latest Virginia Hall of Fame inductees Williamsburg Christmas parade to feature Commanders marching band Williamsburg Christmas parade to feature Commanders marching band Al Roker speaks out after Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade chair mishap Al Roker speaks out after Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade chair mishap 1 dead, 2 seriously injured in Newport News triple shooting, police say 1 dead, 2 seriously injured in Newport News triple shooting, police say New Kent wants public input on future of Makemie Woods New Kent wants public input on future of Makemie Woods The Grinch can’t steal West Point’s Christmas The Grinch can't steal West Point's Christmas Biden pardons his son Hunter despite previous pledges not to Biden pardons his son Hunter despite previous pledges not to Trending Nationally Judge accused of ‘willful misconduct’ for letting illegal immigrant escape court Trump’s talk of reducing or relocating federal workers hits home in Maryland A young Coloradan learning to live with long COVID turns to TikTok to educate about chronic illness Fruit trees and ‘generational learning’ turn this California city into a parrot paradise as temperatures drop NBC’s enhanced yard lines, field numbers for Bills-49ers snow game draw strong reactions from viewersPresident-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday requested a judge in New York State to dismiss the criminal case in which he was convicted in May of 34 felony counts related to hush money payments made to an adult film actress, citing his recent victory in the United States presidential election held on November 5. In urging Justice Juan Merchan in Manhattan to vacate the guilty verdict and toss the charges, Trump's lawyers said having Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's case hang over him after he takes office on Jan. 20 would impede his ability to govern. "Local elected officials such as D.A. Bragg have no valid basis to cause such disruptions," defense lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove wrote in a court filing dated Dec. 2 and made public on Tuesday. Trump in November nominated Blanche to serve as deputy attorney general, the second-highest position at the Justice Department, during his administration. He nominated Bove to serve as Blanche's top deputy and to be acting deputy attorney general while Blanche awaits confirmation. Merchan last month delayed Trump's previously scheduled Nov. 26 sentencing indefinitely to give him the chance to seek dismissal. Prosecutors with Bragg's office supported delaying the sentencing to give Trump the chance to make his case for dismissal, though they said they would oppose that bid. The prosecutors have until next Monday to respond. The judge has not indicated when he would rule on Trump's motion to dismiss, and has not set a new date for sentencing. Bragg's office has suggested he defer all proceedings in the case until Trump, 78, leaves the White House in 2029. In their motion to dismiss, Trump's lawyers called that suggestion "ridiculous." They said that would mean sentencing would happen more than a decade after the investigation started in 2018. A spokesperson for Bragg's office declined to comment. At the outset of their 72-page motion, Trump's lawyers brought up Democratic President Joe Biden's decision on Sunday to pardon his son Hunter Biden, who was convicted on gun charges and pleaded guilty to tax violations. Blanche and Bove said Biden's statement that his son had been selectively prosecuted was an "extraordinary condemnation" of his Justice Department. Trump's lawyers have repeatedly asserted that Bragg, a Democrat, had coordinated his Trump prosecution with the Biden administration, citing the involvement in the case of Matthew Colangelo, a former Justice Department official. "This case would never have been brought were it not for President Trump's political views," the defense lawyers wrote. As an elected local prosecutor, Bragg operates independently of the federal Justice Department. Attorney General Merrick Garland, a Biden appointee who runs the Justice Department, has denied Republican claims that he sent Colangelo to Bragg's office to prosecute Trump. "I did not dispatch Mr. Colangelo anywhere," Garland said in congressional testimony on June 4. The New York case stemmed from a $130,000 payment Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels for her silence before the 2016 election about a sexual encounter she has said she had a decade earlier with Trump, who denies it. A Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to cover up his reimbursement of Cohen. It was the first time a US president - former or sitting - had been convicted of or charged with a criminal offense. Trump pleaded not guilty in the case. Trump was charged in three additional state and federal criminal cases in 2023, one involving classified documents he kept after leaving office and two others involving his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. He pleaded not guilty in all three cases. The Justice Department moved to dismiss the two federal cases after Trump's election victory.

In this article Unpacking the TikTok-led viral boycott of seed oils What the research actually says about seed oils An Aussie nutritionist weighs in on which oils are best According to TikTok, seed oils are rife with health risks and shouldn’t be consumed at all. Here’s what the actual evidence and a qualified nutritionist want you to know. Every time you open TikTok or any major social media platform, you’re bombarded with information regarding what you should and shouldn’t be doing for your health. While there are plenty of wonderful health professionals creating and sharing useful content online, there are just as many (if not more) totally unqualified voices fuelling opinion-based – and often dangerous – trends. The latest? Apparently, seed oils – Rice bran, Safflower, Sunflower, Corn, Canola, Cottonseed, Soybean, and Grapeseed oil – need to be purged from our pantries and never consumed again. @seanmikekelly STOP USING CANOLA OIL! ♬ original sound - Sean Kelly - Sean Kelly The trend, accompanied by hashtags such as #seedoilbad and #boycottseedoil, initially surfaced on the video platform a few years ago, undergoing a resurgence in recent months thanks to some very vocal ‘experts’. To be clear, most creators on the app warning against people using seed oils don't have a problem with the pure substances themselves, but rather are criticising the industrially-produced commercial iterations widely available to consumers. As well-known biologist Gary Brecka explains in this TikTok , mass producers subject seed oils to several heating processes and added chemicals in order to achieve a commercially viable colour, consistency and odour. However, the theories and (loose) evidence contributing to this widespread cancellation of seed oils are largely based on industries in the US. Still, thanks to the video platform, viewers all over the world– Australia included – have grasped the issue of seed oils and whether they are safe to consume. But as Chloe McLeod, a dietitian specialising in advanced sports nutrition , says, these viral TikTok claims shouldn’t be confused with evidence-based findings. “There is plenty of evidence to show seed oils are completely safe for consumption and aren’t something we need to be fearful of. The main thing when looking at fats or oils is we ideally want a higher omega 3 to omega 6 ratio,” she explains, sharing we should all be aiming to include plenty of oily fish in our diets and plant-based sources like chia seeds, walnuts and linseeds. Oils and healthy fats are an important part of our diet. Image: Pexels What are the best oils for cooking? With so many options available in supermarkets, choosing the best oil to roast potatoes or crisp up a schnitzel can feel like finding a needle in a haystack. However, McLeod says there’s no questioning which one we should all reach for. “Hands down the best oil when it comes to its nutritional profile is good quality extra virgin olive oil,” she says. “It contains a diverse range of antioxidants and polyphenols that is unique to extra virgin olive oil and has good evidence to support its benefits for heart health, gut health, mental health and reducing inflammation.” Plus, extra virgin olive oil has quite a high smoke point and tolerates heat up to 210 degrees Celsius while maintaining its levels of antioxidants, meaning it’s totally safe to use with most recipes and kitchen appliances. In restaurants, oils are repeatedly heated to high temperatures and infrequently changed. Image: iStock But if you’re pantry has been cleaned out of extra virgin olive oil from your weekend attempt at Foccacia baking, reaching for other alternatives – including the seed oils – won’t do any major harm. Long before the TikTok experts started piling criticism onto seed oils, one 2022 report in association with Harvard University completely debunks the alleged health risk. According to Guy Crosby, an adjunct associate of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the negative health outcomes associated with processed and packaged foods have less to do with seed oils and more to do with their higher percentages of refined carbohydrates, sodium, and sugar. “Sure, if you cut back on these foods, chances are you’re going to feel better,” Crosby explains, sharing that a food’s cooking environment also plays a big role in its health rating. When oils – seed or otherwise – are used to cook in restaurants or commercial kitchens, they are repeatedly heated to high temperatures and infrequently changed, “Cooking with seed oils at home isn’t an issue,” he says. The European Space Agency issued an alert for the 27-inch asteroid at 4:27 a.m. ET, with the agency saying the celestial rock would create a visible fireball in the sky but that "the impact will be harmless." The asteroid, temporarily named C0WEPC5, has become Earth's fourth detected asteroid strike of the year and just the 11th of all time. Detected strikes are known as "imminent impactors," according to the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, which identified the fast-moving asteroid ahead of its arrival. The space rock entered Earth's atmosphere at 11:15 a.m. ET over Yakutia in northeastern Siberia, creating a massive fireball witnessed by people in the region, according to the agency. Video posted to social media on Tuesday shows the bright, fast-moving fireball darting through the sky before dissipating. It's currently unknown how much, if any, of the asteroid debris landed on Earth. Flyby asteroids are common, and astronomers' ability to detect them has rapidly increased with technological advancements. According to NASA , 132 known asteroids have passed closer to Earth than the moon is since October 2023. Overall, there have been upward of 36,000 asteroid flybys, the agency reported. Adding to the solar system show this week, another asteroid, known as 2020 XR, will fly by Earth at 12:27 a.m. ET on Wednesday, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory . Significantly larger but much farther away from impact than Tuesday's asteroid, 2020 XR is approximately 1,200 feet in diameter -- roughly the same as the height of New York City's Empire State Building -- but will pass Earth at a comfortable distance of 1.37 million miles, according to NASA. While the massive asteroid will unlikely have any impact, and is not considered a threat by officials, NASA designates any object that comes within 4.6 million miles of Earth as "potentially hazardous."
