Brown’s Toronto Raptors teammates burst off the home team’s bench, cheering for the veteran forward. “It’s just because they didn’t think I can jump, because I haven’t jumped really, or they haven’t seen it, and then they didn’t see it the last year,” Brown said, adding he knew he would dunk as soon as he crossed half-court. “I told them I could do it and I was like, ‘if I get the chance to, I’mma dunk it.’” It was Brown’s first dunk in eight months as he scored 12 points and had three rebounds off the bench in his season debut on Sunday as Toronto lost to Atlanta 136-107. He’d missed the first 31 games of the Raptors season as he recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery on Sept. 20, a process that took longer than he expected. “I thought I was gonna be out like six to eight weeks but some things didn’t go my way,” said Brown. “There was a lot of swelling in there for a while. “Things happened, and then I was supposed to come back, like, three, four weeks ago, but there was still swelling there, so they told me to take my time.” Brown averaged 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks over 34 games with the Raptors last season. He was traded from the Indiana Pacers to Toronto on Jan. 18 as part of a package for all-star forward Pascal Siakam. He’s averaged 8.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists over his career in 416 games with the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana and Toronto. Brown’s return doesn’t just add depth to the Raptors’ lineup, but brings some much-needed energy to a struggling team that has lost 10 in a row. “You see him get out there and put his body on the line after being out for so long,” said Scottie Barnes, who led Toronto with 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists but eight turnovers in the loss. “He’s making himself so tired out there just guarding, pushing himself. That’s what the team needs. “We’ve all got to match that energy every single night. That’s the effort we’re going to need in order to win games.” Head coach Darko Rajakovic said that fatigue is a major factor in the NBA’s longest active losing skid. He said that a lack of focus played a role in Toronto’s season-high 31 turnovers on Sunday. “We hit a wall. We look tired. We look drained,” said Rajakovic. “Guys are not in a rhythm. That’s the reality that we’re in right now. We’ve got to find a way to get out of it.” It was the third consecutive game where the Raptors had given up over 130 points, and second 29-point blowout in a row. “Getting beat by 30, man, at home — that’s unacceptable,” said Barnes. “We can’t be doing that. We got to go out there and play harder, be smarter. “We had a lot of turnovers today. We can’t allow this to happen.” Brown was more optimistic. “We just need some rest, and we’ll push through it,” he said, noting that a stomach flu had spread through Toronto’s locker room. “I mean, all teams have this at some point, even championship teams, so we’ll push through it. We’ll be fine.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 29, 2024.
The managing director of Jaguar has said he was disappointed by the "vile hatred and intolerance" in responses to a clip of the car company's new advert. The luxury car brand posted a 30-second video on X, formerly Twitter , on Tuesday which featured models posing in bright clothes but no vehicles. The clip prompted a backlash online among some 120,000 comments, with the social media site's chief executive Elon Musk responding: "Do you sell cars?" Rawdon Glover, Jaguar managing director, told the Financial Times: "If we play in the same way that everybody else does we'll just get drowned out." "So we shouldn't turn up like an auto brand. We need to re-establish our brand and at a completely different price point so we need to act differently." Mr Glover added: "We don't want to necessarily leave all of our customers behind. But we do need to attract a new customer base." He denied that the video was meant to be "woke", and said he was disappointed by the "vile hatred and intolerance" in comments about individuals in the clip. In response to Mr Musk's comment on X, Jaguar said: "Yes. We'd love to show you. Join us for a cuppa in Miami on 2nd December?" Replying to another user who questioned where the cars were, the company said: "The story is unfolding. Stay tuned."Radical tilt-ducted hybrid aircraft looks to redefine air travelATLANTA — Georgia tax collections rose by 2.3% last month compared with November of last year, the state Department of Revenue reported Wednesday. Glamorous Ukrainian tennis star holds a ROCKET LAUNCHER as she swaps Centre Court for warzone front line during the off-season Elina Svitolina shared photos of herself holding a rocket launcher on social media The tennis star has often used her platform to draw attention to the Ukraine war By JAMES COHEN Published: 22:10, 9 December 2024 | Updated: 22:43, 9 December 2024 e-mail 1 View comments Tennis star Elina Svitolina swapped her racket for a rocket launcher as she returned to Ukraine during the off-season. Svitolina, ranked 23rd in the world, has often used her platform as one of the country’s most successful players on the tour to draw attention to the war in Ukraine. She continued that trend on Monday afternoon after sharing pictures of herself holding a rocket launcher and a machine gun in Kharkiv , Ukraine. Taking to instagram, the 30-year-old wrote: 'Kharkiv has a special place in my heart. 'The city that gave the feeling of real home when I started my professional career here at 12 years old. The city that continues to provide warmth and protection during the great war. 'If you ask me, where do I find the motivation to fight in sports arenas? This is my country, my people, my Kharkiv and our heroes'. Tennis star Elina Svitolina shared pictures of herself holding a rocket launcher on Instagram The Ukrainian said her motivation comes from 'my country, my Kharkiv and our heroes' Svitolina is currently the world No 23 and has previously reached a highest ranking of third View this post on Instagram A post shared by Elina Monfils (@elisvitolina) According to Bild , Svitolina - who is married to fellow tennis star Gael Monfils - often spends her spare time in Ukraine aiding in the fight against Russia. The Ukrainian will soon leave her homeland to get her preparations underway for the upcoming Australian Open, which is just over a month away. Svitolina has reached career-high rankings of No 3 in singles and No 108 in doubles by the WTA and won 17 WTA Tour singles titles. She began playing tennis at the age of five in the Ukrainian city of Odesa where she lived with her sporting parents and her older brother Yulian, who is nine years older than her. Speaking to Mail Sport last year, Svitolina spoke on how her family's decision to move to Kharkiv to pursue her coaching nearly came unstuck due to her mother's career as a professional bowls player. She said: 'At that time my mum was into professional bowling. My mom is very competitive, and likes achieving. 'It was important that before we move to Kharkiv... Mum had to wrap it up with professional bowling despite her competing at the national championships. 'She trained for seven to eight hours a day. For the first couple of months I was in Kharkiv alone. I was in a rented apartment. 'In the morning I was picked up by the coach. At the end of the day I was brought back to the apartment. And it was very important for me to be back before it got dark. I was a very shy child. Those were my first steps to independent life.' The 30-year-old also showed a picture of herself operating a machine gun while lying down Another photo showed the Ukrainian using a machine gun from within a sheltered area Svitolina has often used her platform to draw attention to the war in Ukraine Elina agreed the regime was hard work, saying: 'Yes, yes. But I am grateful for that time because I became more independent. At the weekends I was walking around Kharkiv by myself to learn what to show my mum when she visits.' Describing her life as a 12-year-old living alone, she said: 'Kharkiv is a very interesting city, totally different from Odesa. People are not as open, that's what I remember the most. That city fit me a lot, I lived close to a park. She also told how she family struggled to make ends meet during her younger days before she became a poster girl for Ukrainian sport. Elina said: 'When we moved to Kharkiv, it was a crisis time. My dad was into the real estate business, and it was very hard. And when my mom arrived, we had a budget, not a very big one, which we could spend on food.' NonePresident-elect Donald Trump’s pick to oversee the entire U.S. military, former Fox News personality Pete Hegseth, was confronted Thursday by a reporter who asked point-blank whether he raped a woman in 2017, as described in . “As far as the media is concerned, it’s very simple,” said Hegseth, who was on Capitol Hill to meet with senators tasked with weighing whether to approve him as the next U.S. defense secretary. “The matter was fully investigated, and I was completely cleared, and that’s where I’m going to leave it,” he said. The police report does not state that Hegseth was cleared; rather, it recommended that the case be forwarded to local prosecutors for review, The Associated Press reported. Prosecutors may choose not to pursue a case for an assortment of reasons, including the limited availability of witnesses, whether a jury might deem those witnesses credible and whether alleged victims want to participate in the process. REPORTER: Did you sexually assault a woman in Monterey, California? PETE HEGSETH: I have -- ah -- as far as the media is concerned, it's very simple. The matter was fully investigated, and I was completely cleared, and that's where I'm gonna leave it. — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) The incident allegedly occurred at a Republican women’s conference hosted at a hotel in Monterey, California, where Hegseth had been invited to give a speech in October 2017. A woman, whose name has not been made public, sought a sexual assault exam at a medical facility a few days after she said she woke up with a hazy memory of being assaulted by the Fox host. She had reportedly confronted him earlier, in a social setting, because she felt he was behaving inappropriately with other women. The woman texted a friend that Hegseth had a “creeper” vibe about him, the AP noted. She said “things got fuzzy” in the evening. Hegseth allegedly brought her to a room in the hotel, took her phone and blocked her from leaving. She said she had a memory of a shirtless Hegseth bending over her, with his dog tags dangling above her. The nurse who treated her contacted police about the allegation, the AP said. Hegseth, a Trump loyalist, has faced other pushback to his bid to lead the world’s largest military. He never achieved a rank higher than major while serving in the Army and has a dearth of leadership experience. Related...

HOUSTON (AP) — Tyler Herro scored 27 points before being one of six people ejected after a fight in the final minute of the Miami Heat's 104-100 victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday night. Herro was thrown to the ground by the Rockets' Amen Thompson with 35 seconds left and the Heat leading 99-94. Players and coaches from both benches then came onto the court. Both players were thrown out along with Rockets guard Jalen Green, coach Ime Udoka and assistant coach Ben Sullivan. Terry Rozier was also ejected for Miami.
